The drive you have listed from Serverpartdeals.com on eBay is cheaper directly from the seller, and they don't charge tax on their website.

LINCOLN5 seems to give a $5 extra discount as well.

I just received my drive and can confirm that the serial number does not report being under warranty through Seagate. SMART data shows a fresh drive so I'm going to run a preclear and see how it handles.

I should add that the seller claims they are an authorized seller of Seagate which feels scammy. On second thought I am going to request a refund.

Would love to know if they charge you a restock fee. I tried online chat with Seagate yesterday saying AAAWave listed themselves as an authorized seller. Rep game me a generic "Please visit this link to view our retailers." When I asked again saying they were not on the list, but they said on their website they were authorized, I was told there were a number of Value Added Resellers that are not on the retail list that are authorized and he would check that list. He suggested me checking the serial number to see if it came up as valid and said Seagate might honor the warranty if it said valid and it was not an authorized reseller.

He never came back with an answer on if they were on the VAR list. When I asked again after waiting almost 10 minutes, I got the cut and paste "check out this link for a list of sellers," then was told if there was nothing else, the chat would end and he ended it.

I ended up taking a chance and ordering one yesterday. Supposed to be here tomorrow. Looks like I may be returning it also.

Just received mine, and despite the listing saying it's new, I received what appears to be a refurbished item with no warranty. Returning for a refund.

What led you the believe it was a refurb? Did the SMART data report any power up time?

Received mine today. Looks brand new and sealed. Put serial # in Seagate website and it says to contact place of purchase for warranty information. Spoke to Seagate customer support who said it is an OEM drive. Asked for a copy of invoice and said Platinum Micro, who seems to own AAAWave is an authorized OEM seller and they would honor the warranty if my invoice said Planinum Micro, but since it says AAAWave, they will not honor the warranty. Contacted AAAWave for a refund and they said they would honor the 5 year warranty. Any time during the 5 years, if I had an issue, I could contact them and they would replace the drive.

I asked where on their website was this policy listed and they said in their terms and conditions, but admitted the info in there was vague, but it does say they pass through the warranty of the manufacturer. YMMV if they actually will warranty this for 5 years. Their support claims they have been in business since 2000 and are reputable, so there is no worry if they would be around and cover the warranty for the next 5 years.

Really went down the rabbit hole here, but here it is. All proof and references are below. Done quite a lot of research. Please rep if found useful.

Warranty might be hard to claim bc they aren't a authorized reseller. Seagate has refurb units with a guaranteed 2 year warranty you can trust because you're getting them direct for about 15 bucks cheaper a drive.

Personally, since you have to pay shipping both ways, I'm not sure it's worth it. You're talking about 40 to 60 bucks for combined shipping both ways and the hassle of dealing with the warranty. I'd rather just view the drives as disposable and roll the dice with even cheaper refurb drives from reputable stores. I've done this for years and of you pick the right stores, you can really hedge your bets.

Especially when you're talking enterprise drives. These things are designed to handle the abuse and hours of data centers. My guess you're not going to be as hard on them as data centers, so that has to improve the odds/longevity.

Here is the drives I'd buy. 120k purchases. Store was on there since 2005. 9k feedback. Huge stock.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/304194684486

Here is some advice / info I found.

Warranty:

You can verify serial numbers / warranty here.:
https://www.seagate.com/support/w...lacements/

Common counterfeit techniques here:

I didn't know stripping the screws would void the warranty, lol. Crazy.

https://www.seagate.com/support/w...checklist/

Do you need to buy from an authorized reseller for warranty?

Yes. They aren't on the list.

https://www.seagate.com/support/w...-warranty/

Worth getting new?

Your choice. Can't verify they are new because unsure of seller. But, you can buy refurb directly from Seagate on ebay for 209.

They offer 2 year warranty and you know it's legit. Yes, not 5 years, but still unsure of seller and if the warranty would even be honored.

If you're worried about warranty, you can buy an additional 2 years from all state from ebay for 18,which gets you to about the same price.

Tbh, tech depreciates quickly, so after 2/4 years, what is replacement cost going to be? Potentially new with another warranty? How much more to upgrade to a larger drive?

You still have shipping costs and such when doing warranties. 50+ for round trip.

Ebay link:

Vetting the store:

AAA seems to be the same company as platinum micro. Thanks to a reddit post

https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc...aawavecom/

They have the same addresses and have two stores. This already seems odd to me. I don't trust it. They have identical inventory in stock numbers as well.

Nice research. Thanks and repped. Your eBay links don't work. What are the seller names?

Graet investigative work, Thank you!
I have had manu a hard drive fail on me as well as other computer components and I have never once been denied warranty replacements no matter where I bought the drives from. If the serial number shows it is within warranty period I got covered 100% of the time.
