I have this very same model from years back. I really won't recommend this as it overheats, if I remember correctly it has a film solution along with it to help it cool, but for some heavy workload in term of read and write....
Like for example, encoding a video, editing, decoding etc, anything that requires sustained heavy read and writes for prolonged periods of time (several hours), you run the risk of overheating it and in my case it will run too hot disconnect, and corrupt the entire m.2 drive. Resulting in absolute rage when all the your files in your drive gets completely nuked and will have to force initialize it for it to be usable again (even that won't work at times)

In short: Get this if you plan on playing games fast, transfer files etc. Don't get this if you plan on using it for stuff that will require heavy use that involves lots of reading writing and deleting on the drive at the same time.

Edit: also for those that think the cooling pad will be enough, it won't. You will have better luck just taking the top off and let it cool that way. It was a very poor design to have this enclosure on a fully enclosed METAL rectangular box of abomination with no ventilation in mind. Also If you buy this make sure you use usb-c to usb-c. You can use a usb-c to usb3.1 or 3.2 but you will experience random disconnects now and then which is not ideal for something that's specifically designed for fast speeds and heavy use with the portability it's supposed to be designed for.

these are also top close instead of slide close.
that makes it much easier to align the thermal pad with the nvme and case. good cooling.

This M.2 enclosure is a great addition to a tech bag. Supporting multiple SSD sizes and both SATA and NVMe is amazing to have in one device. It has come in handy a number of times.

Why would anyone in their right mind use an external drive to do video conversions and heavy work? That's not what you do in external drives.
Some people don't like using their main drive to encode and decode stuff. Especially so if it involves terabytes of writes and rewrites. I'm not calling you dumb but I'm sure you do know that every storage has certain writes/ read limits . If you are encoding, decoding, upscaling dvd collections etc. You will need that usb-c speed for that boost in speed, and not destroy your main drive where you have your most important stuff sitting on.

Smart people would rather choose to degrade an external m.2 drive rather than their main drive. just common sense.

20Gbps controller is Realtek RTL9220DP
You can expect same good reliability from its 10Gbps counterpart RTL9210B

And genius people, myself included, would install a second drive in their computer that could have a better heat-sink AND run faster for such tasks. But then again, common sense isn't very common it seems.

I have the USB-C M.2 enclosure. Random disconnects if you move it slightly, different cables made no difference so probably something internal with a poor connection. I thought I just happened to get a dud 'til I read some other people having the same issue with this model. I'm still looking for a more reliable replacement.

You live now, not in future. If your mb supported 20gbps, it would be well worth spend the extra $15 (and get rgb bling bling)

correct. apparently usb forum didnt feel they were getting enough attention so they decided to come up with this asinine naming.

USB 3.2 gen 2x2 devices are 50% of the speed of USB4/TB4 for like 25% of the price - and that's not counting the add-in cards most modern computers need for USB4/TB4 and those cost like $100 just to get the functional ports.

If you have gen 2x2 then it's a no brainer cost and performance wise to use it, rather than waiting for USB4/TB4 to be more widespread and economical.

Cheapest 40 Gbps enclosure is like $100, so paying 1/3rd that makes sense to me even though I wanted 40 Gbps
