I have this very same model from years back. I really won't recommend this as it overheats, if I remember correctly it has a film solution along with it to help it cool, but for some heavy workload in term of read and write....
Like for example, encoding a video, editing, decoding etc, anything that requires sustained heavy read and writes for prolonged periods of time (several hours), you run the risk of overheating it and in my case it will run too hot disconnect, and corrupt the entire m.2 drive. Resulting in absolute rage when all the your files in your drive gets completely nuked and will have to force initialize it for it to be usable again (even that won't work at times)

In short: Get this if you plan on playing games fast, transfer files etc. Don't get this if you plan on using it for stuff that will require heavy use that involves lots of reading writing and deleting on the drive at the same time.

Edit: also for those that think the cooling pad will be enough, it won't. You will have better luck just taking the top off and let it cool that way. It was a very poor design to have this enclosure on a fully enclosed METAL rectangular box of abomination with no ventilation in mind. Also If you buy this make sure you use usb-c to usb-c. You can use a usb-c to usb3.1 or 3.2 but you will experience random disconnects now and then which is not ideal for something that's specifically designed for fast speeds and heavy use with the portability it's supposed to be designed for.

these are also top close instead of slide close.
that makes it much easier to align the thermal pad with the nvme and case. good cooling.

This M.2 enclosure is a great addition to a tech bag. Supporting multiple SSD sizes and both SATA and NVMe is amazing to have in one device. It has come in handy a number of times.

I haven't seen that. Probably depends on the drive being used in the enclosure…I run pretty disk intensive stuff on several of these and have not once seen an overheating condition.
upscaling videos in 4k to 60 fps on high with use of all gpus and all threads. So not only is it creating a ridiculously large data as per frame (in this case a chunky jpg to be stored/converted in an unfinished mp4 container that is considered a frame). could result to upwards of 100-200gb in the low end of compression.

I don't even run into this sort of problem in high end games, mainly because all of the stuff happening involves the reading of the data files (loading scenes, movies scenes etc). Meanwhile the other is reading, writing, and deleting of data are happening the same time. It can keep up but it sure makes that m.2 run for it's money. The kicker is if you get interrupted during the process that mp4 container becomes corrupted and unplayable.

This looks good, but M.2 SSDs are getting a bit too expensive recently. Where are all those SSD deals with lower than $50/TB price point? Not going to buy this only to find that I need to buy a new SSD to fill it in😅
Buy it and save it for a rainy day.

Cheapest 40 Gbps enclosure is like $100, so paying 1/3rd that makes sense to me even though I wanted 40 Gbps

I have two of the 10gbps enclosures, one with a 2TB 970 Evo and one with a 2TB Intel 670p. Copied the same batch of 1.5TB files to each drive. The 670p got way hotter than the 970 Evo. The Evo barely got warm. How hot it gets under sustained loads depends on the SSD being used.

There are lots of much worse enclosures out there that seem to trap heat instead of transferring it to the case shell.

That said, when expecting extended work loads, I have taken to placing my NVME enclosures on top of my desktop when possible so it gets some airflow. Or I'll put the top down on my desk to help transfer heat that way.
that works too I have 3 fans pushing out airflow from inside to outside my case, you can just put it on top one of those fans and that would be fine. But as I said earlier this isn't for the type of person that would be using this for something like lets say editing 4k footage, upscaling, encoding in high bit-rates etc.

It's pretty self explanatory when someone says heavy read/write. Playing games involves a lot of more reads than writes and anything above an ssd speed is already an overkill for most games currently out now (hence m.2 and nvme are not categorized as "recommended") while the other involves the reading, writing, and deleting of data simultaneously.

But you get some people here that just say just buy a bigger 1-2tb nvme and destroy that lifetime TBW lifespan ( when you are dealing with 200-250gb per file writes) on where you have your OS running on.

Not true anymore. New generation of ASM2464 based enclosures have broken the intel monopoly on 40Gbps chips. 40 Gbps enclosures are now running around $50. SO the price is closer to linear - $20 for this best of the breed 10Gbps enclosure and 4x more for 40 Gbps. I own 5 of the Sabrent 10Gbps. Rock solid.

I would wait for sabrent to release a ASM2464 enclosure with a similar mechanical design as the 10Gbps one.

And genius people, myself included, would install a second drive in their computer that could have a better heat-sink AND run faster for such tasks. But then again, common sense isn't very common it seems.
Why in the world would I remove the sole reason for this product? it's PORTABILITY? You think I'm going to be lugging around a desktop with my 1tb nvme and 4tb ssd and 8gb hdd?

Are you stupid? Are you dumb? Why would you remove the single appealing aspect of this device being it's portability and ease of use by making the excuse that you can just chug in another drive on your rig and problem solved?

You're telling me you would rather lug around your one only main device everywhere you go rather than have something as simple as something you could put in your pocket hassle free and walk away with another laptop. But rather, you have a screwdriver with you at all times so you can keep switching drives in between your rig and laptop?

No links allowed. Go to ali or other and search for
ASM2464 enclosure

If you want a reputable vendor in the US, go to OWC and look for 1M2 enclosure. That is $120 and is beefy, well designed and comes with excellent support.

If you want it for $40, go to ali.
Look for a sandwich type enclosure (no sliders). I would not recommend the $34 blueendless. Jeyi at least has firmware updates on their site. Maiwo looks interesting, no experience with them. Be prepared to deal with new product issues because the ASM2464 is new.

I would not get that enclosure. I got it and the blueendless model has all sorts of design issues. 1) slider design so the thermal pad does not make good contact with the case. The NVME holder itself is plastic. 2) The USB C connection is recessed and only allows narrow oval cables. Most USB 4/TB3 cables are rectangular, so the cables cant fit unless you modify the case. 3) The fan switch is reversed. Off is on, on is off. I got it for $34 + tax just to test it out. So far, I dont see much of a difference from the Acasis TB3 enclosures, which are far better built (and more expensive). There is about a 7% speed increase with the ASM2464 chip vs intel TB3 chips.
