If you have hardwired alarms, it's best to have the same model for all, otherwise you can get unexplained alarms going off.

Vacuum out your alarms every 6 months (or more often if you have a lot of dust or spiders). Debris building up inside them can cause them to fail or alarms to go off inexplicably. If you're remodeling or doing something that will create a lot of dust, remove the alarm temporarily.

Ionization alarms are the ones that cause a lot of nuisance alarms (the ionization only alarms are the ones that tend to be dirt-cheap). Some have started recommending photoelectric only (or mostly photoelectric only and maybe one combined photoelectric/ionization). Keep ionization alarms out of areas near the kitchen and bathrooms (moisture from bathrooms can set the alarm off).

Buying CO monitors separate from fire alarms means that if one alarm mechanism goes bad, you don't have to replace the whole thing. Unfortunately, some states now require them to be combined - but if you own your own house, you can do what you want (unless you give an inspector some reason to require you meet the regulation, like remodeling).

Your comment cannot be blank.

The 10 year smoke alarms will not last 10 years. I bought a bunch for a new house and had to replace the majority within 3 years.
On the flip side of that, we bought all new ten- year alarms just about six years ago, and they're all doing fine.
These have a manufacturer's warranty of 10-years.

First Alert Precision Detection, 10-year Battery Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm, 2-pack

Probably cheaper in store as they add for shipping.

Heads up, for those in CA, a new law goes into effect on July 1, limiting any sales of new smoke alarms to either hardwired-only, or 10-year-battery ones, no more swappable battery models. It covers some of the "warranty" versus "battery length" stuff below.
Quote :
Beginning July 1, 2014, California Senate Bill 745 requires that all solely battery-operated smoke alarms and combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms sold and installed in California must contain a non-replaceable, non-removable battery that is capable of powering the smoke alarm for a minimum of 10 years. The requirement does not apply to any alarms that are hard-wired.

This appears to be a battery-only version. Please be careful, as many towns have specific regulations prohibiting smoke alarms that operate solely on batteries. My town is one of them. It's generally better to purchase a hardwired, interconnected alarm.

Maybe for new builds or for those with existing wiring, but no town can force people to wire their houses for smoke detectors.

Thanks but its battery as well, I can't have it due to my town not allowing battery only alarms.

I had a hard-wired house. Because of never-ending nuisance alarms, despite the fact I had all the same models , and vacuumed them out regularly, I disconnected the alarms from the hard-wired system, and as needed, bought battery-only models.

If you look at reviews of alarms, there are tons of people reporting nuisance alarms, day and night, with no obvious reason why the alarms went off, even when you buy alarms from well-known manufacturers.

The quality of manufacturing of fire alarms is garbage.

this sounds to me like you're being visited by aliens while you're sleeping and most likely getting abducted without you knowing. it is a well-known fact that substantial power drains out of batteries prematurely in the vicinity of alien craft (such as a craft hovering over your home). the fact that multiple batteries all drained prematurely in multiple units substantiates this further.

Any deals for Smoke and CO combo alarms? I need two in each floor along with regular smoke alarms in each room according to code.

I just bought bought a 2 pack of first alert hardwired for $60. About half the price of Lowe's or Home Depot.

I think the 10 year is referring to reliability and compliance not battery life. These need to be regularly replaced. The internal components will go bad

I seen it at Walmart and its half the size of this and always $10. I have try & tested the half size and they are just as good.

My First Alert BRK SC-9120B just died, can I use this model to replace it?
After some research, I can answer this question myself: Yes

If its a 10 year battery sealed detector it should last 10 years as advertised, as you are unable to change the battery. As I mentioned I got 3 years max. YMMV
