If you have hardwired alarms, it's best to have the same model for all, otherwise you can get unexplained alarms going off.

Vacuum out your alarms every 6 months (or more often if you have a lot of dust or spiders). Debris building up inside them can cause them to fail or alarms to go off inexplicably. If you're remodeling or doing something that will create a lot of dust, remove the alarm temporarily.

Ionization alarms are the ones that cause a lot of nuisance alarms (the ionization only alarms are the ones that tend to be dirt-cheap). Some have started recommending photoelectric only (or mostly photoelectric only and maybe one combined photoelectric/ionization). Keep ionization alarms out of areas near the kitchen and bathrooms (moisture from bathrooms can set the alarm off).

Buying CO monitors separate from fire alarms means that if one alarm mechanism goes bad, you don't have to replace the whole thing. Unfortunately, some states now require them to be combined - but if you own your own house, you can do what you want (unless you give an inspector some reason to require you meet the regulation, like remodeling).

Your comment cannot be blank.

The 10 year smoke alarms will not last 10 years. I bought a bunch for a new house and had to replace the majority within 3 years.
On the flip side of that, we bought all new ten- year alarms just about six years ago, and they're all doing fine.
These have a manufacturer's warranty of 10-years.

I can't vouch for this (won't even ship to Cali), but $30 for 7:

If its a 10 year battery sealed detector it should last 10 years as advertised, as you are unable to change the battery. As I mentioned I got 3 years max. YMMV
Where'd you buy it? I wonder if you got a counterfeit item? Quick search suggests some people are complaining about the same thing, but these devices are dead simple (no moving parts) so I'd be surprised if it was a big problem that could only be explained by shoddy engineering and greed.

Yes, I bought 6 of those, 2 types 3 Photo and 3 Inonization sensor, installed 3/2017, all 6 still work great, tested frequently

this sounds to me like you're being visited by aliens while you're sleeping and most likely getting abducted without you knowing. it is a well-known fact that substantial power drains out of batteries prematurely in the vicinity of alien craft (such as a craft hovering over your home). the fact that multiple batteries all drained prematurely in multiple units substantiates this further.
Exactly. I remember the first seven times I was abducted by the Zorag Galthonians of Ggykkxyzjtwqitxll, I came home to that annoying occassional chirp from a different smoke detector each time. I even filed a formal interplantary complaint with the Zorag regulatory counsel but all they did was send me plutonium fusion units which I tried to explain are not a one-to-one replacement for 9 volt batteries. Then told me I could appeal to the Higher Galthonian review and analysis committee but to do so I had to prove Zorag citizenship, and honestly, I'm just not ready to make that committment just yet.

What has happened with Amazon "Prime free 2-day shipping?"

Shipping for this item is a date range sometime in May.

Can this be installed in a garage?

Yes, but follow installation instructions about avoiding "dead air" spaces.

"On ceilings, install Smoke Alarms as close to the center of the ceiling as possible. If this is not possible, install the Smoke Alarm at least 4 inches (102 mm) from the wall or corner.

For wall mounting (if allowed by building codes), the top edge of Smoke Alarms should be placed between 4 inches (102 mm) and 12 inches (305 mm) from the wall/ceiling line, below typical "dead air" spaces.

On a peaked, gabled, or cathedral ceiling, install first Smoke Alarm within 3 feet (0.9 meters) of the peak of the ceiling, measured horizontally. Additional Smoke Alarms may be required depending on the length, angle, etc. of the ceiling's slope. Refer to NFPA 72 for details on requirements for sloped or peaked ceilings."

Ionization. You don't want these. It won't detect smoldering fires well at all. Get Photoelectric or better yet, combination detectors

I ordered the First Alert SMI110 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke Alarm model yesterday and it got delivered today. However, it came in a box and looked like bulk packaging and not individually packed (like in the hard plastic covering). Mine's has a Nov 2023 date on it as well......hopefully, it will be fine....

Amazon has really turned a blind eye towards counterfeit items being sold on their platform over the years. Fire alarms are too important to risk equipping a suspect item to save a few dollars.

Heads up, for those in CA, a new law goes into effect on July 1, limiting any sales of new smoke alarms to either hardwired-only, or 10-year-battery ones, no more swappable battery models. It covers some of the "warranty" versus "battery length" stuff below.

Well that was 2014, and those 10 year battery ones never last

I've also had some go bad way before 10 years. First Alert has warrantied them for me. They didn't even need the receipt since the units have the mfg date.
