Yea, but it's good to be 2-3 generations behind on routers, because the new routers are so buggy.

When this router came out, it was bug heaven, until the community ironed things out with merlin. And you always want to buy the most popular asus model, because it has by far the most merlin users fixing bugs. In comparison, the biggest-fastest-routers, king spiders, don't get nearly as much support as the leaner pound for pound champs like the AC86u and AX86u. Go 1 model higher, ac87u, barely anyone bought those.

When we switch to 7 in about 5-10 years, we should probably buy the WIFI7 - 86u.
Not hating on this deal, but just to put things into perspective: This router has been $219.99 almost continuously since June of last year. While this may be near the lowest price ever, it is less than 10% off from the normal street price of this router.
Do your clients support WiFi 7? What's the benefit of WiFi 7 ?

This really is a good router though, it's got really good community support (merlin), and the bugs are well patched at this point.

If you buy a new router, 6e/7 whatever, if it get fixes at all, you're looking at years down the road, and that's only if it's Asus. If you buy tplink, netgear, etc, just don't expect anything good, if said function does not work well out of the box, that's how it's going to be forever.

Community support is more important than anything else for routers, the manufacturer can't be bothered to fix anything, they're busy trying to get people to buy newer routers. It's weird that this is the situation, but now you know.

I have the upgrade to this with 6E and for my use case it is useless. Only our phones will be able to connect to it and it only reliably covers that single room. Speed is only slightly faster, like 600 mbit compared to 500. The 5GHz band for the WiFi6 SSID on the other hand reaches the entire house and outside in the lawn.
Range and speeds on 5ghz and up drops like a rock given distance. Just the nature of things.

Realistically AC is more than most people will ever need for mobile devices. It can do ~400-650mbit in a normal house.

I can't think of a single common scenario that requires more wifi speed around the house. Big file transfers, but how often do you do these on a laptop.

This or ASUS RT-AX88U PRO AX6000?
AX6000. Was literally plug and play for me, haven't had a single issue with it so far. Bought one back in February.

I've got this and an RP-AX56 node so both ends of house are covered, and the speeds and features are awesome (running Merlin). Have Wireguard and OpenVPN servers set up, as well as a VPN client, with VPN director routing traffic from different devices through it, works great and pretty easy to set up. Highly recommend.

I have one of the TP-Link Mesh systems... It works fine but has been annoying in some cases because of limited control. Is this a better alternative? I have a 4300sqft house to cover (plus I need some outdoor range). Would I need a couple of these to cover the whole house and back patio?

I own 2200 sq ft ranch on 0.25 lot. I have two of these routers (hard wired together) and can cut grass two homes in all directions and not lose WiFi connection while streaming music. I have been very happy with the router. Purchase one and see how it performs. You could always add an additional one.

How did you hard wired them? How far between them?

I don't see why this is a deal. I bought a used ROG GT-AX6000 recently for $150 at Amazon. Works well!

Bruh! Who do you think you are talking to? I STILL rock the AC86U with Merlin. I live in relatively small space at the moment. I'm just sayin'.

My next update is going to be at least 6e.

People can buy this router but I just wanted to let them know it is two generations behind.

T-mo RT-AC68U (technically end of life status, but works well enough for my needs and Merlin will try to give security updates through 2024 if possible) ultra bargain distorted my cost analysis perspective, so I still think $200 is way too much for something with only one 2.5G port Smilie

Right?! Like $200 for two generation old tech when I am rocking an AC68U with Merlin?! No thanks.
