Full Disclosure:
This is a complicated deal that most readers will not qualify for. I am also posting with an ulterior motive. I am considering it. Might be a great deal, but if it's not, the SD community can be relied on to tell me exactly how it's screwed up and point me to a better deal.

Restrictions:
  • Must be a Spectrum Internet customer. If you are not in an area where you can get Spectrum Internet, you can't get this deal.
  • I have not included the cost of Spectrum High Speed Internet in the price of the deal, as their rates are the lowest in my area, and I'm assuming are competitive elsewhere.
  • I have included 60 days of Spectrum Mobile Service in the price of the deal, because your mobile service is likely less expensive and/or you are in a contract you can't leave.
  • I have included their Get $100 extra off a trade-in deal in the price of the deal. I assume you trade an old, junk phone. If you don't have one that qualifies, ask a friend to give you one.
  • Phone is locked to Spectrum mobile service for 60 days. They will unlock for free after that provided the phone is fully paid off.
Deal Instructions:
  • Purchase the phone in a single payment of $299.99
  • Select trade-in option. Their claim of $100 extra on trade is overstated on newer phones. Two examples (one good, one bad)
    • My wife's 4-year old mid-range phone (Moto G Power 2020) gets a $105 trade in. I'm taking that - great deal!
    • My Pixel 5a gets $70 trade-in from most vendors, but only gets $140. That's good, but not $100 extra. I'll probably sell it on Swappa for $100-120.
    • The phone must have a $1 or more trade in value, so if it's really, really old and/or broken, it may not qualify. Broken phones can qualify if they have trade value.
    • A trade is not required, but if you can get $100+ for a junk phone and don't take it, you're just being an idiot.
  • Buy their least expensive phone plan $19.99/mo for 1GB data. Not a great deal here, but you only need to keep it for 60 days/$40. I counted this in the $249.99 price in the title.
  • You must keep Spectrum Internet and the Spectrum mobile plan for 60 days.
  • Wait 60 days. Set a calendar reminder.
  • Unlock for free and switch to the vendor of your choice. I'm going with this other slick deal.
  • Cancel unwanted services.
About the phone/why I want this phone:
  • Fast enough for my needs (I don't game or do processor-intensive stuff - many may feel it is underpowered)
  • Relatively inexpensive, midrange phone. After my trade and swappa, about $150 gets me a 5-year phone.
  • Samsung is a reliable brand as rated by Consumer Reports (equal to Apple and Google, better than everyone else)
  • Newly released USA version. 4 Years of android updates (android 17-18) and 5 years of security updates. A reliable phone I can use for many years.
  • Very good battery life, especially after I tweak it back down to 60hz.
  • SD card storage, no need to backup my photos/videos.
  • Very similar architecturally to the established a54 (same processors/ram). This means that if there were hardware issues, they probably addressed them in this new version.
  • Basically, a phone I can buy, use for years, and not worry/think about.

Does the pixel 5a suck or something? Have phones even improved the last decade? Other than 4k cams with no control over the camera unless it's a Sony? I guess that means Sony made a "new" phone by Makin the 2000$ Android tiktok browsers have their first real camera an added a 3.5mm jack. LG added quality speakers. Now that brand is gone. If Google is as good as Samsung I thought my n7 was the last real upgrade to phone tech/speed. An ime the disposable Samsungs first year's I tried them; were slower than n4 (which is extremely slow compared to good phones since 2019). Can't say I've tried the newer nerfed Samsung tho

Pixel 5a doesn't suck. Love it. I'd keep it, but security updates end in August, and I'm not using it after I've missed an update.

Consumer reports says that the best phones for reliability (just working without need for service) are Apple and Samsung. They added Google this year. Every other brand is less reliable, as reported by their customer base. That doesn't mean unreliable, just less than those top 3.

You should have considered the S24 line that had a similar total OOP from Spectrum a few months ago. You could then flip them and upgrade from S24 -> S24+ -> S24 Ultra. IMO the S24 > A34, unless you need a specific feature from the A34 line (yes, there is value in a mSD slot).

Yes, no time machine and all that, but yeah.

Yep. That's the drawback of only phone-hunting once every several years. I missed good deals.

I would add that I believe we've seen similar Samsung mid-range deals in the past in the ~$100 range. I can't say for certain they would have a similar unlock timeline (~60 days - aka Verizon MVNO).

The original post looks great and well thought out, with a lot of information, but I'd consider waiting for a better deal. TU for post, deal is Frown.

The next deal will be fold 6 and flip 6. It should be in July. Or wait for s25. Dont bother with cheap budget phone.

No folding smartphones for me. I value reliability too highly to want fancy features that make the phone less reliable and durable.

I've had a mid-range phone for years (Pixel 5a, benchmarks about 40% slower than the a35).

It runs Android 14 like a champ and does everything I need it to do without major lag. I don't know what benefit a faster phone would bring me.

I see value in the flagships phones 7-year support calendar though.

Yeah, I'm thinking that may happen around black friday, where this phone will be close to free.

Unfortunately, I have to replace in the September timeframe at the latest - can't hang on until Black Friday.

Pixel 8a first. Then Fold/Flip 6 and then Pixel 9 models.

If you're looking for midrange, I would wait for the a55 instead. It has a new Exynos processor that Samsung is apparently making a lot of improvement on. The a35 is using the same processor as the one from the a54 last year.

Also, this deal isn't for the a34, but the a35 which is relatively new. Why is the mod not changing the title?
- Good catch, my bad on the typo. Yeah. a35 - fixed it. My wife has an a34 (which she likes, even though it's a latin american/greymarket one that won't work on Verizon)
- I would prefer an a55, but it isn't coming to the USA. I could get a greymarket one, but nah.
- The S24FE might be an option, but it probably won't have an SD card. That isn't a deal-killer for me, just a nice to have.
- Pixel 8a would be great if the screen wasn't so small. I have old eyes. There are great deals on the Pixel 8 right now that I considered, but current 8 Pro deals are too pricey for me.
- Pixel 9 Pro would be awesome - I love pixels (previous phone was a 2XL). But, expensive, and I'm not sure I can wait long enough for a good deal on one. It'll probably come out in October, and I lose security updates in August.

I think the a55 will be released later. It would be strange for Samsung to not release the a5x series here considering it's one of their best selling phones.

I have no doubt that there will be deals for Pixel 9 series. If you want, you can get a35 or a55 first and then trade it in later for Pixel 9 deals. Since they're pretty new devices you might get decent amount of credit for their trade in value.

Why choose this over the A54 if it's the same specs?
Does your current cell provider not offer those or the A25? I see the A25 at Boost for $100 or you could get the A54 at Metro for $50.

Actually, I'm seeing the A35 at Metro for $170 https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/c...axy-a35-5g their unlock policy is 6 months but their available plan for it is $40, so you could consider that on your price differences when shopping around.

The final thing I'd like to point out if you're switching from a Pixel, is that the galaxy A phones still don't have wireless charging. Sure it's not a big deal if you don't use it (and it's hella inefficient) but you'd be very surprised if you were expecting it.
You could maybe look into going for the $50 S23 FE at metro if you're willing to dance with the devil at a Metro dealer, those guys are scumbags.
