So I haven't done a true battery test, but the closest I got was web browsing while letting a game (Oldschool RuneScape) run in the background. Brightness was just under halfway, and refresh rate was 60hz. I got about 2.5hrs on that setup. I read some reviews claiming 8-9hrs on a true video only battery test.

TLDR: It should be really good for a windows machine non gaming.

Bought one of these last night. I was desperately trying to get the open-box excellent for a nice discount, but I wasn't quick enough. Kind of glad fate steered me toward a brand new one though. Thank you tons OP for the diligent laptop deals! It's been a nice ride deciding what to get but the balance in this laptop for it's price/performance/weight/temperature are exactly what I want. Only wish the physical footprint was a bit smaller.

Has anybody got a case or padded sleeve that they would recommend for this lil' beast?

I picked this up today and trying to decide between this and the Lenovo Slim Pro 7. This definitely a better screen, better graphics card compared to the 3050 and faster CPU. The Slim Pro has a much slimmer form factor, way better speakers and more premium build overall. Testing out the battery life to see how they compare. Anyone done a comparison on the two or have options on Slim Pro?

Lenovo Slim Pro 7 ($900)
Ryzen 7 7735HS
GeForce RTX™ 3050 6GB GDDR6
16GB LPDDR5 6400MHz
14.5" WQXGA (2560 x 1600), IPS, Glare, Touch, 100%sRGB, 350 nits, 90Hz, LED Backlight, Glass

Legion Slim 5 ($1050)
Ryzen 7 7840HS
GeForce RTX™ 4060 Laptop GPU 8GB GDDR6
16 GB LPDDR5X-6400MHz
14.5" 2.8K (2880 x 1800), OLED, Glare, Non-Touch, HDR 500, 100%DCI-P3, 400 nits, 120Hz

Well, according to the guy earlier in the thread, a 3050 dGPU automatically disqualifies it for people wanting to game.

Which is ludicrous.

If you're interested in the slim pro, also look at the lg gram 16" pro w/3050. Although it's 1200.

I happened to find a Slim Pro 7 X open box for $550 a few days ago and bought the Legion Slim 5 yesterday (thanks OP!) to compare them. The Pro 7 X I found has a 3K / 120Hz screen otherwise the specs are identical to the Slim Pro 7. I've been deliberating returning the Pro X and keeping the Legion, but probably will return the Legion. Here's my thoughts:

- OLED / HDR is definitely more vivid on the Legion but I don't think it's that much better compared to the already great screen on the Slim. Especially taking into account OLED trade offs like higher battery drain and screen maintenance to prevent burn in.

- The fans on the Legion make a high pitched whistle, even in Quiet mode. It's not even that loud but it gets irritating.

- The Slim is only ~ 1/2 lb lighter but it feels substantially lighter to carry around. The odd shape of the Legion also contributes to the awkward feel.

There's nitpicks I have about both models but I'm willing to live with the Pro X since I got a good deal on it. If gaming isn't a factor for you, I would recommend looking at the Slim 7 deal posted a few weeks ago ($700).

Good luck!

I see we still haven't been able to get over this after I stopped responding for the sake of moving on.

I'm simply pointing out that you recommended a laptop with an objectively inferior GPU, no OLED screen, a completely different screen size, and it costs $150 more. My point is that it wasn't a similar like-for-like laptop and wasn't particularly helpful in reference to this thread.

Your suggestion would be like if I went to a thread about a laptop deal sporting a 4080 and went "I'd recommend this other laptop with a 4060 GPU with a smaller screen that costs more". It would likely receive a similar response from people saying it isn't comparable.

I'm sorry if my take on your recommendation bothered you that much to the point that you're still thinking about it a day later. I'll be sure to avoid criticizing any of your comments in the future.

The Slim Pro 7 is my daily user and I've been weighing between another one or this one for a 2nd. I've been really happy with the Pro 7 overall. I'm not a typical gamer but I do play COD MWIII and it has no issues whatsoever running it hooked up to my LG 34" UW (only 1440 so no 4k). Not gaming the battery life is usually pretty good when I remember to switch it over to Battery Saving mode. I can usually get 5-8 hours depending on what I'm doing (haven't tried it unplugged gaming that I can recall). I do photography and CAD work which was the main purpose buying it. Keyboard is good, speakers are ok, screen is great. The only thing I don't really like is the trackpad is too "clicky" compared to my Macbooks but that regularly a complaint of mine with Windows laptops and others think it's fine. I'm mainly looking at the Slim 5 as a 2nd mainly just because I have a bad habit of spec chasing and I like the better graphics card even though I would probably see 0 benefit with it.

Don't give up on trying to find an open box. I find that checking in the morning shortly before/after the store opens will yield the best results. It helps if you have a few Best Buys near you too of course.

And with this currently being on sale, there's a good chance you'll see some more returns in the coming days as people buy it and change their mind.

My open box was listed as "Good" but was in pristine condition and I'm not convinced it was ever even turned on. So definitely keep checking and try your luck if one pops up near you.

Slim Pro does feel alot smaller (which is good) even though they are the same screen size. I am playing CS2 and other games on both to gauge what I can or cannot live with. I did a simple battery test this morning. Charged both to 100%, took the screen light down one notch and left Youtube running. A bit over 6hrs 15 mins and the Slim Pro have 10% left and to my surprise, the Legion has 13% left.

I generally agree that especially with DLSS, a 3050 punches far above what previous xx50 cards used to. But at some point that 6GB of VRAM will be a limiting factor. If you want anything at all future-proof for at least 2-3 years, I'd recommend the 8GB 4060. Some games will still eat that up quick, but DLSS 3 helps a ton to offset that, especially at 1440/1600p.

Let me reword it for you since you didn't seem to get the gist of what I meant -- soldered RAM allows for FASTER RAM to be used since the soldered connection is more reliable than a socket. It also allows for lower power RAM.

LPDDR5X is running at 6400MT/s or 7200MT/s or faster and at very low latency (my LPDDR5X 6400 is at 18 CAS Latency according to HWINFO). Find that in a SODIMM.
Let me reword it for you since you didn't seem to get the gist of what I meant - There is no discernable real-world difference. Real world. Not synthetic benchmarks. I personally would much rather have 32GB of replaceable DDR5 5600 (such as in the Legion 7 Pro) vs. 16GB of soldered RAM.

People complain about the soldered ram when it doesn't make a difference in most use cases. I'm convinced people will find anything to complain about.
