Given the extra cost and the risk of temperature fluctuations prematurely spoiling food it's not worth it for me to get an auto defrost. But your situation might be different. Chest freezers apparently have less of problem with frost compared to upright. I can't personally speak to that though.
Most of the negatives reviews are talking about physical damage during shipping

HELL YES!! I bought a frost-free garage-ready version a year ago to keep baby milk. It stops freezing every 3 to 4 months. I had to throw away 8 gallons of breast milk. that's much more valuable than grocery meat.

I notice that the compressor seems to be running about half the time, to keep temperatures at about -2 or -3F on the "2" setting. The front door of the unit is also quite cool to the touch. Is that what other SDers who bought this are finding?
The unit only draws about 1 amp, so I think that's alright. But I'm surprised that the compressor still needs to run so frequently. I suppose undersized compressors means lower freezer cost.
