While you work on the weight, you slowly start tapering off acidic foods. Cut out coffee (caffeine), hot peppers, hot sauce, alcohol, and other pro-inflammatory foods.
Never eat before bed. Cut off food intake after about 7pm so you can give yourself 3-4 hours to digest before laying down.
Chew your food slowly while eating meals and always aim to leave some room in your stomach (not always full). You should never have that "Wow I'm so full" feeling in your stomach.
If it has become chronic, make an appointment with a Gastroenterologist so they can do an endoscopy and rule out anything abnormal. As others have suggested, it may be wise to inquire about rogue bacteria or imbalance in the gut (H. Pyloria, Perfringens, Staphylococcus, E. Coli, etc.).
Famotidine will slow or stop the production of acid temporarily, so it is best used if you have occasional heartburn. And omeprazole will slow the production down for 24 hours. I have been on omep for 15 years because my acid reflux is so bad (hereditary issue). No long-term effects that I can discern.
No matter what you use, it is IMPERATIVE to get acid reflux under control. It is a symptom that your stomach is pushing acid up your esophagus, which quickly erodes your esophagus and can lead to esophageal cancer. A family friend of ours "just dealt" with the inconvenience and never had it treated. He died of cancer at the age of 26. It was heartbreaking because it was totally preventable, but he was too proud to get it taken care of.
Switch bread to sprouted, white rice to the whole grain rice (that takes multiple hours of soaking or pressure cooker to cook, it should not be cookable on 1, 5 or 10 min boiling water). Eat whole fruits and veggies instead of blended, juicer = processor so avoid that. Avoid cold cuts, stick with meats that are as unprocessed as possible. Try not to go hungry for extended periods and stop eating as soon as you're no longer hungry, not until you get full. Don't eat 3-4 before going to bed. If you drink milk or yogurt stick to whole/full fat (not the skim milk yogurt with cream added later).
