I have a NAS (network attached storage) — basically a small PC with a bunch of hard drives attached. I download a bunch of movies and put them on there and I can stream them from anywhere or give access to others.

Think like Netflix where you provide the movies. Can initiate torrent downloads easily from your phone and move them to the Plex folder easily too if you have a synology NAS. (Nas isn't needed for Plex but it's nice not running things on the computer I use all the time)

I'm trying to find a backup/viewing solution for my phone pictures. Would a nas and Plex be a good solution? Anyone try this before?

You have to make sure the NAS has an Intel chip and Quicksync. If it has an AMD or any other chip it might struggle with streaming video.

I see there is Linux support. Anyone using it on a Linux platform? What's your experience?

Yup. Using it on Ubuntu. Stable and like it, running for 4 years no problem

I think another thing that I like from Plex is the Plexamp. It has been really great to manage my mp3 files. Picard to tag them, Plexamp to play them.

I used to 100% do this. Took a lot of setup with Radarr and Sonarr etc. But….then I found out about Stremio and Real-Debrid. Honestly…I haven't touched Plex.

The only thing I use Plex for now is my audiobooks. I download them from an online site, put them in Plex and stream them via Prologue app. It's flawless.

So that's my setup now. Plex for audiobooks only and stream everything else via Stremio + Real-Debrid. Plex still serves those who like to hoard media. I don't do that. I stream, watch and I'm done.

I started using Jellyfin to get hardware acceleration while waiting for a Plex pass deal and now I feel like Jellyfin is fine for my needs. I wish the ecosystem was a bit more mature but friends and family have had no complaints about Jellyfin

A synology NAS with synology photos. They revamped the app in the last year and have made tons of improvements. Autosyncs from your phone and easy to browse.

Used to love plex until it got bloated up. If you are hosting something like this on a personal computer, make sure you patch it regularly. It's had some rough vulnerabilities in the past.

Same, plus playing my music on Sonos

I think that takes care of most of what "they" have to say. Taking out the trash early in the thread. Enjoy your Plex… in any way you use it.

Can anyone explain the use of plex. Heard about it many times but never understood the reason for this.
simply search "plex" on youtube. tons of tutorials covering everything about it. fyi, most do not need the benefits of the plex pass that this thread is discussing. but again, search youtube for "plex pass" for details.

Same... Slightly more work to set up, but definitely worth it for the privacy aspect alone.
