That's a great price for an I3 laptop with 1080p screen, in before shrewd with their pitch fork complaining about non IPS, dim screen, non backlit keyboard blah blah blah.

Negative. This laptop is for general office use.

I have the 512 variant of this model and just added more RAM. It can go up to 16. Also added 1tb EVO ssd and upgraded the wireless card to wifi6. And that's as good as you're going to get as far as upgrades for this machine.

How bad would this be for video editing? Mostly 1080 go pro and phone videos. Can the ram be upgraded cheaply?
It can handle it very well after adding an additional 8 gigs of RAM. It comes with 2x 4GB. So just buy 2x 8GB and replace. Crucial 8GB - $20 ea

I need to get a lap top for my kid entering the 6th grade... I can add memory... and I have installed ssd drives before... but I didn't enjoy that... so not sure if I want to go through this effort.

This is actually a slightly better deal than the Black Friday Dell special for $270 we bought last year. But that's to be expected. This is 12th Gen tech that Best Buy/Asus is trying to clear out. The fact that you can upgrade it to 16gb is a huge plus, but honestly 8gb is enough for a lot of basic users who can avoid 15 tabs in Chrome or Firefox!

I'm really tempted to get this as a replacement for my Chromebook.

Don't overthink it. It's a nice deal if you just need a notebook with basic email, spreadsheet, word processing functionality. Plenty of people around that need it. Editing photos and playing games....probably want to consider something better.

If your 6th grader is a gamer (like my teens and pre-teens are), you aren't going to give this a serious thought...because that's not what it's built for.

If you just need an extra terminal at the house for kids to do things like school work, this is perfect for that kind of thing!

At quick glance, the Best Buy deal is better.

BEST BUY PROS
$70 cheaper.
Faster processor (same gen, but... 1.2 GHz vs. 1.1 GHz)

MICROCENTER PROS
Touchscreen
Higher bandwidth via HDMI out (newer HDMI spec)

If you need a touchscreen, then yes, Microcenter is the way to go. But otherwise, Best Buy seems to be the winner.
1. 256 SSD vs 128 SSD
2. Not just touchscreen, higher res, better quality display (300 nits WUXGA vs 250 nits 1080p). And the fact that the display is a 360 degree hinge that can be used for media consumption better.
3. You can't just look at Ghz of CPU for performance. They have different number of Cores and Threads.
Best Buy Model CPU is a i3-1215U Score: 10,999
MicroCenter Model CPU is a i3-1220P Score: 14,423

Considering 128 SSD is just very very small and will need to be upgraded (if not soldered), feels like paying a little more is a worthy upgrade all around.

If you have to ask then it's probably good enough. You'd know if it wasn't.

8GB isn't a lot for win11 today, but you'll get by if you don't have a lot of tabs and applications open
Darn, looks like this isn't for me then. I keep 100 tabs open in Chrome.

If I have to invest over $100 in upgrades, I would rather get the MC version or get something else. RAM 🐏 is not a problem, but anything else will just be improving an inferior & outdated product.

Got this today for my kid at college. Had an extra tb nvme and 8gb of ram so it made sense. The smode wont release though. Pita. Easy to upgrade otherwise. Screen is dull as you would expect and I felt like 8gb really crawled. Worth the dough for its use.
Never had a problem with S Mode Switch. Is there a problem with your Microsoft account? Maybe at max number of devices or Store logins?

Apologies. Yep, my "quick glance" was very quick on my way out the door. And I didn't do the person who inquired justice with my reply.

I thought OP's deal was also 256GB SSD. I bought one for my father-in-law since he was in the market for a cheap laptop. Good news is that he won't need much storage, if any, since he's just needing it for e-mail and web browsing in his shop.

I also glanced at screen size and saw they were both 14". For those who don't know, WUXGA is 1920 x 1200 vs. OP's 1920x1080.

Per the Best Buy reviews, the SSD on OP's deal can be upgraded. So if they are correct, FWIW, it's not soldered.
