Royal Oak has performed better for me than Kingsford.

Never had a problem with it staying lit throughout the cook

The royal oak briquettes I've used in the past have been awful. Don't get hot and often times it does not stay lit.

I use both lump and briquettes, it depends on what and how I'm cooking.

Anyhow, great deal, $6.66 for 20 lbs of briquettes which is great for these days. In for 20 bags and Lowe's is delivering them for free to my house by Sunday which I was not expecting - saves me a trip!

p.s. I have a huge basement and both lump and briquettes will last forever in a climate controlled environment. I have a LOT stacked on plastic pallets, always wait for huge discounts
and then stack 'em up.

New to charcoal grilling. Got "briquets" and steak was ruined by strong perfume smell. Any rec on just pure charcoal?
Skip the lighter Fluid and get a Charcoal Chimney, It will start your Charcoal in no time and no Lighter Fluid Smell.

The quality sucks. I bought 10 lb, the fire didn't last as long as other brands, and produced lots of ash. LOTS OF ASH.

This is excellent charcoal.

My favorite is the Royal Oak Chef Select, which are large briquettes.
The B&B briquettes are just as good as the chef select, just a different flavor profile.

Kingsford Blue/Original has (or at least had, and was the subject of cancer lawsuits) anthracite coal, which is why it lasts so long. Stay far away.

Lump, or some all natural, all wood briquettes (wood and starch or similar binder) is what you want to use for best flavor and food safety.

I've been using Royal Oak for as long as I can remember. Go through at least a dozen 15lb bags of it a year and not once have I found anything other than lump charcoal in the bags. I've always used an electric charcoal starter, never any fluids- but a month ago I finally tried Weber's charcoal chimney and what a gamechanger that is. I can't believe I hadn't tried the chimney sooner. Also- while at Home Depot a week ago I saw another lump charcoal brand, Jealous Devil, on sale and so I bought a bag to try. It definitely burns hotter than Royal Oak which led me to burning a lot of my food my first 2 times using Jealous Devil. I would buy it again if on sale, but otherwise Royal Oak has been working excellent for me all these years.

For the Royal Oak, are you buying briquettes or lump?

Lump charcoal is mainly for smoking. I have not noticed a difference in temp with briquettes. if you're searing or doing light smoking, briquettes is just fine. more ash but it's cheaper.

I used to use lump only. It's more expensive and same performance unless you're doing long smokes. But even if you are doing long smokes, I would recommend getting premium lump. Royal oak will work but it will burn out a lot faster and you'll have to keep adding some along the way.

Kamado Joe XL makes a good premium lump. they're expensive but use it for smoking and it's great.

I'll throw 6-8 of these atop the Kingsford in the chimney, works great. Nearly everyone finishes their grilling about the time the coals are truly ready. Start your coal 1/2 hour earlier than u think you need to, and you'll get much more consistent results. I've got 200 lbs now....should get me most of the way thru next summer.

I'm in for 8 bags at least. Even Cowboy briquettes are 45 cents a pound at Walmart, geez. Royal Oak burns fast, cannot be reused and generates plenty of ash but I can deal with all that for the discount.

I miss the days of getting Kingsford on sale for 25 cents like clockwork on Memorial and Labor Day.

I've had the same experience the few times I've tried royal oak briquettes
I agree with you. Used to use them all the time but started experiencing the same thing you guys are. ( not staying lit / hot and burning out quick ). I'VE since switched to B&B charcoal briquette and logs. Leaps and bounds better than royal oak and kingsford!!!

Where are you getting Chef Select? My local Do It Best store stopped carrying it a couple of years ago.

What's others have said, plus make sure you clean the grates and empty the ash pot prior to adding grill items. Also, some soaps can leave a perfume residual on the grates which then transfers to grill items (just something to look out for)

For grilling I prefer Kingsford but the Royal Oak works just as well in my charcoal drum smoker. I picked up 150lbs for $50 with free delivery. Best deal I've found in a long time.

Anyone try this in the Masterbuilt Gravity and have any issues with it?
Yes and yes. I have tried these about 3-4 separate times in my 560 now and every time I have a difficult time starting them and very inconsistent burning. Wouldn't recommend.
