Amazon should be ashamed of themselves. This is like regular price, nothing special about it. They used to do better deals around Prime Day. What a bust.

Here are some use case scenarios for a streaming device.

The Hisense h9g used faulty memory that caused the main board to fail if too many writes occured. The best way to prevent this was to disable the internet, not use on board apps and use a streaming device.

For the Samsung s90b, the company apparently sent out firmware updates that lowered the brightness of the TV. So to prevent an update for those who did not receive it, you would keep the TV off the internet, unable to use onboard apps, so you need a third party device.

I have an s90c that I do not want nerfed, so I use a fire stick on it and others on avs forums do the same with other streaming devices. I also have 2 h9gs that I keep off the internet.

I use a streaming device on my ust projector, the on board apps are laggy compared to a streaming device.

Another use case is that Samsung store does not have a larger app library compared to Google or the TV is not able to run certain apps.

I use an onn streaming box on one of my TV's that has Google TV on it. I can run emulators up to Dreamcast with the onn box, my TV is not able to do that.

I have the max and hate it at least I don't like it with plex. I have a few firesticks and cubes throughout my house and this is the first time I've had stuttering issues. The max makes plex think it is an outside connection, can't seem to figure out how to fix it. If I disable remote viewing on plex (watching shows outside of the network) it seems to work fine, but for whatever strange reason other than that constant stuttering of and network drops. I believe I have issues with other apps as well, but have long given up on it and use it for my exercise area where I'm streaming hulu usually. Maybe I got a dud, but even factory resetting, that did not work. I hate the max, which is sad, because I really wanted the extra memory. I also hate the cubes (so far each generation has the same issue, I have two generations of cubes and I hate them both), they work, but I find myself having to restart them at least daily to get them to work correctly.
I have the previous gen Firestick Max 4k and it works great with Plex. Albeit most of my content is 1080p

Trade-ins are improved, at least for my account. I got 20% off + $5 instant gift card for an Echo Dot 3rd Gen, as in, before even having dropped it off. Last Thanksgiving I attempted to do same, but the discount and $5 gift card would not be applied until the Echo Dot was received by them. So anyway, I ended up paying $15 for a Fire Stick 4K today.

Interesting, I remember instant trades were becoming more rare.

When I tried going through the trade in, it said something about a rebate I would receive later meaning not instant.

Looks like the Max is also a little bit faster (faster CPU).

Remotes are a little different too.

If you have a strong Wi-Fi signal then you probably won't notice lack of Ethernet much. I always prefer to wire everything I can and keep the Wi-Fi traffic to a minimum.

UPDATE: They do sell an accessory for $15 that let's you use Ethernet (100 Mbit not gigabit) to connect a Fire TV Stick:

This adapter is better

The Amazon one maxes out at 100mbps while this one can go up to 480mbps

Upgraded to a new 2024 Onn 4k pro box with many new features. Anyway, my other standard 4K Onn box runs smoother than my Fire TV 4K max. FireOS is garbage and out of date that only a few old side-loaded android apk can work.

I'm trading in a cracked Fire tablet for $15 credit Plus 20% off. Wondering if I should use 20% off for $7 off the max stick or $20 off the cube? How does max stick compare to cube? I won't be using the voice Alexa functionality.

Wondering 4K stick versus 4K maxx? I don't think I need the added capacity of the max and if picture/sound quality is the same I think I'd rather save money with the regular 4K stick even if menus are slower

I bought a 3rd party clone just last month from ebay (L5B83H Voice Remote Control for Amazon Gen Fire TV Stick Lite 4K 2nd Cube 1st) for $5.30. It works eratically and would not buy again. Be carefull with the 3rd party remotes. I would stick to OEM if you can.

I've used many different models of FireTVs over the years, and for a long time considered them the best streaming option for power users (Roku for casuals). But I can't really recommend any FireTVs anymore. The UI has gotten so bloated and awful, and requires way too many clicks just to get to your apps and not whatever Amazon is trying to push on you. And their devices have become increasingly slow/laggy over time, for no good reason.

The Walmart Onn GoogleTV streamer is just better in every way, and I'm gradually shifting my TVs over to it.
The issue you can't remove unwanted apps and Amazon keep adding more apps that cause it to slow down. You need to upgrade the hardware every 2-4 years, even you only use 1-2 apps. There have been complain relate on the subject, but the company still wouldn't allow to remove the apps. The remote easy to brick. I tried to follow many reset guides and no luck. You can buy a new remote from Amazon, but cost around $30 (18 months ago).

Unless you NEED the amerzon ecosystem, the $20 ONN is verry close in performance of the 4k for $20 everyday. The $50 ONN has everything you would expect from the cube, but more ram and Storage (3gb ram 32gb storage) over the cube too. I need a Amerzon ecosystem and am disapointed to see the cube still is not cheaper this prime day. The 4k MAX is the one to get IF you need Amerzon. Redicules to even offer 8gb storage these days. Maybe a refb 2nd gen cube will pop up for less than the cost of the $50
ONN box.. IDK.. I would not need a Amerzon device if com-crap released their app on the google os.

I own 2 Fire TV 2nd generation boxes (4" square x 3/4" thick). One thing I don't like these, the unwanted apps (movie, music channel, etc,,) can't be remove. The company keep adding more junk apps overtime. The hardware bog down after few days, which require to unplug the device from the outlet to get back to normal speed. I switched to Roku Ultra about year and never deal with slow idle issue at all.
I've been using the Fire Stick 4K Max (16GB version) since January and have never had issues with slowdown. It is a bit faster than the old Fire Stick 4K, for sure (which still worked well, but I did feel it was a bit underpowered). And I appreciate there is more storage (though 16GB is still a laughably small amount of storage space). I enjoy using Plex on the Fire Sticks; the app works great and playback is very responsive. There is definitely a fair amount of Amazon Prime ads on the device, but since I am a Prime member I do like learning about the shows and offers - so that doesn't bother me. On several occasions the ads have helped me find something interesting to watch that I wouldn't have known about otherwise.

It's not perfect though. Every once in a while the stick will freeze up and I will need to power cycle it. I've had to power cycle it maybe 2 or 3 times since January, so definitely less than once per month, but not too often considering the diminishing quality of software these days.

I have a Smart TV with Roku built in and hated it so much that I bought the original Fire TV Stick 4K 3 years ago. Some folks like Roku, but the Plex app (at least in my opinion) just doesn't look as polished or work as well as the Fire stick's version of the Plex app.

That's just my experience, but sharing another data point. I want to make sure there is a balanced view of the Fire stick, as many times people who have a good experience don't share it.
