I don't trust Generac after having several neighbors with their Generacs failing during this hurricane Beryl outage in Houston. The one older lady behind even me had it serviced and working just before the storm, afterwards it just clicks on and off. People can't get Generac on the phone when they need it most.
Yes, my brother's uncle's sister had issue too, I can't trust something that I heard a rumor of being unreliable.

The problem isn't generac, it's people getting service done on the unit . People go years with out getting maintenance then when they hear a hurricane is coming they want to all a sudden get work done. Gen techs are too busy to do a full service by that time because every one is calling them including their big ticket customers like hospitals ,nursing homes so it's last min work for house and a lot of issues from neglect over the years.

Sucks to hear that! Also in the Houston area and have a Generac, and it has always worked. I've only known of instances of these things failing when people didn't have them regularly serviced and maintained. It sucks to pay more, but having Generator Supercenter in Tomball monitoring it remotely is what I would recommend for people who aren't handy with it themselves.
Exactly lots of ppl never want to get a PM preventative maintenance until they hear a hurricane is coming. Then it's to late Gen-techs are to busy to do a full maintenance on your unit and test.

What's the average annual maintenance for these? I'm hearing $500-ish.
Just get the extra 2-3 year warranty from whom ever installs it for you. that includes maintenance. Or do your self most of the maintenance is changing the oil , filters, battery if past two years or in bad shape

Double it (& that assumes an easy install without electrical panel upgrades needed or a long gas line run needed).
If you have a modern house 200amp service it should not be a problem . Gas is another story but not to deficult

do these deals normally include a transfer switch? is 20A standard for a transfer switch?
Many don't include a transfer switch at all. And the dealer usually customizes a transfer switch to your needs example 200amp 400amp based on your request but thats when you order one . I can't speak for a sale and what comes with it.

Been on the fence for a long time to get one of those tri fuel generators. May be super basic, but how do you ensure the rain water isn't damaging it, unless you have like a well ventilated shed or something. But I'd be curious to know cause I am sure lugging that out is probably gonna be a challenge too.
I store mine in the garage and wheel it out as soon as rain/wind dies down after storm. I have a tarp and bungee cords that I can suspend over the generator to run it in light to moderate rain.

We were very lucky following Hurricane Beryl and our grid power came back after 5 hours - just as I was wheeling generator out!

If you have limited mobility and/or absolutely must have backup power throughout the hurricane itself, than an automatic standby unit is a better option. But a large tri fuel portable is a good and relatively affordable way to stay comfortable during the days-week+ that it can take for grid power to be restored after a major storm.

I just purchased the Generac 7500w standby with automatic transfer for $1619. It burns less than half the propane per hour and powers 8 circuits. If you ever need it to run for a few days you will definitely see the difference in your propane bill. These larger units are overkill for most people.

That seems a bit high. Just by keeping sump pumps running or food in a fridge from going bad it would be worth it at that price anyway. Probably worth it for AC in certain parts of the country/world also. Or if you're WFH. Otherwise I don't see much value in it
My neighbors experienced that on their 24k Generac. They don't even use half the power that the generator creates either. That's the exact reason I went with the 7500w.

Who would you suggest?

I heard lots of Generac success stories right after Beryl.

Except for 1. They filled it with gas 2-3 years ago i"in preparation" but it failed. Sounds like user-error to me.
The answer here is typically Kohler for their hydraulic valve lifters. Never need to adjust it vs paying generac every year for someone to come out and maintain it.

Most anything that runs on Natural gas can run on propane with a basic conversion. Typically orifices and regulator swaps.

Neither of those go bad either. Literally ever. So they were definitely referencing gasoline, which does go bad.
Yea this is in south Louisiana after a hurricane. Most people are getting these for central A/C and fridge

Look up Gentent.
I literally use a 10 ft square popup set to the lowest height. Gentent is $100+ and has one use, to cover a generator. A generic 10 ft popup will cost about the same but has other uses.

Sizing these is like sizing any other generator. There are pros and cons. Smaller generators use far less fuel at idle, but you then have to be careful about what you turn on. Larger generators allow you to live basically like normal, but will cost more to run.
