From mackdack that I always use for reference :

DS224+ (also 920+, 423+, 220+, 720+, 1520+) supports 4k transcoding with inbuilt GPU (rest Synology does not or very incapable). Adding RAM also help in overall performance. DS224+ is Value buy for first time Plex users (add more RAM to make it 6GB . RAMs are very inexpensive )

QNAP TS-464 has everything you need for Plex but little expensive.

FYI: 4k transcoding is mostly needed when you want to play your Plex content on mobile/ipad (assuming you have plex pass). On home TV, you rarely need 4k transcoding.

For non-Plex users , most of the NAS are fine.

The 923+ does transcode, it just doesn't have GPU acceleration.

Curious: What are the main reasons people would use this instead of just plugging an inexpensive HDD into your Wifi router's USB3 port?

Speed, security, RAID,...?

PS - My cheap Router NAS seems to work well as a media server for my FireTV's.

Neh. Synology vault backup is valuable than other NAS. Jellyfin which is free and better than Flex and doesn't need a NAS. Unlike Flex, all native media players support full Jellyfin.

dual Fault tolerance, in built apps to torrent remotely, easy ability to VPN this specific traffic, part of 3 2 1 backup solution to sync to backblaze, docker container support to get around cg-nat, backup your mobile device Media with face recognition, time machine backups

DS224+ will do the job nicely and then some as a photo/video backup storage.
I think the DS224+ is overkill for backup of this sort. I wouldn't go to the Plus series until you get into the world of transcoding and Docker containers. I had an older J series that served me well for several years for backup and networking files, so I think the DS223j should be fine.

Also note that there's the 1-bay DS124 for around the same price (~$150) at B&H and Amazon if you want some extra power but don't want to bother getting another drive to set up RAID. That's a way of having a backup of your backup in case one drive fails. Keep in mind that if you get the DS124 and ever change your mind about that, it has USB ports. You can easily hook up an external drive and set up an automatic backup of the internal drive.

Same here. Using Seagate drives in mine.

I'm going to retire my QNAP TS-463Be. Mostly because despite poring over forums and threads over the years, I haven't been able to get the system to sleep properly. It just keeps churning non-stop 24/7. It's extremely annoying. General consensus seems to be that QNAP just couldn't get sleep to work. Mileage may vary from person to person but it's a mostly a crapshoot. My much older 2-bay Synology system sleeps without issue, and wakes up only when a file is needed.

I'm wondering if there will be a sale on the DS1522+. Amazon doesn't seem to have it in stock, so I'm fearing that model will be skipped in this year's Prime day deals.

Whether I get the 923+ or 1522+, I will miss Plex transcoding though. But I already have Infuse lifetime subscription, so I had started to go transcode-free anyway. (Side note - anyone with an Apple TV, look into Infuse; unlike Plex, it does not rely on the codecs that come with Apple TV. The developers pay for various Dolby/DTS licenses directly, and the software has all possible codecs built-in. It basically does away with all transcoding. Excellent software that I would highly recommend if you are in the Mac ecosystem).

I bought the DS223j for the exact same price back in april, its a nice little budget unit. You can install plex and qbitorrent on these slower units using docker, but I haven't tried that yet.

As much as I might hate myself for settling for a Synology, with the way things have gone over the last 2-3 months, having something simple that just works might be the way to go. I can save some moneys as well. I have spare PCs I can set up as a Ubuntu or Debian box and run the Docker stuff on that if the Synology wimps out. Just a matter of if I wanted to spend the money on the four bay or not.

Ships from Amazon, I got it 2 days after sending the requested info.

Seems like you get much better bang for your buck with terramaster.

Some sites are offering 6% as well when purchased from Wally and then stack with 5% from Discover could be the best deal. Debating if we'll see cheaper from Amazon or not since it doesn't appear that Amazon sells it currently.
