$899.99 is the lowest thus far for this 2024 120Hz model. The 2023 model was recently less, but it's 60Hz.

I don't understand the economics of this.

How is it even possible to sell an 85" for less than a grand? QLED no less... I understand it's no premium TV, but I just can't fathom it.

20 years ago I paid 4k for a 50" Plasma. This year I got a 77" Samsung for $1800. 5 months later I could get an 85" for literally HALF that. Crazy.

The dimensions on this are weird. It says it's closer to a box shape than a rectangle that I'm used to. Does that affect the picture any? I know I'm thinking old school like when you would buy a movie full screen versus wide screen and full screen would cut off the edges of the picture to fit the most important in. Most stuff seems to be formatted now for the wider screens.
The height dimensions (for 85") on Best Buy are correct, but the width is incorrect. The width is actually 74.4" NOT 47.4". The dimensions listed on Best Buy for the 98" are correct.

Assuming this pertains to physical TVs…

We ordered the Hisense - 85" Class A6 Series LED 4K UHD 85A6N for $700. Is this a much better TV and deal? Is this truly. 4k at 120hz? We look at a YouTube link for a 65 inch TLC and it was shown that it can do 120 hz at 1080p/1440 only.

Thanks,
Don't buy any hisense A series or model 6

Only U7 or QD7 and above

TV manufactures' are willing to sell TV at a loss. They make their money through forced advertising on the OS.
Second: Nowadays TVs are disposable. 2034 There'll very few individual stating that they have a perfectly working 10~15 year old TV that they gave away to upgrade to something better and updated.

I ordered the TCL 85-Inch QM8 QLED 4K Smart Mini LED TV with Google (85QM850G, 2023 Model) yesterday for $1499.

Is the Mini-LED version worth $600 more than this? Should I cancel and order this? Thanks in advance!

I have a less expensive tcl 5 series qled (precursor to q6) in my kids play space and the tcl 646 (precurser to qm8) in my living room. The blacks are a lot blacker on the 646, but you only notice when watching videos that are more or less tech demos to show off black levels. The real highlights are from the brightness, and the 646 can easily get twice as bright as the 5 series. HDR looks awful on the 5 series, but shines on the 646. It should be about the same for the newer tv's you are cross shopping.

What is crazy is less than 4 years ago 65" 4k tvs with 120 motion were going for $100-120 from best buy, target, Walmart, etc.

If you're looking for a 75" with a 120hz refresh rate, the TCL Q7 is also on sale on Amazon for $800.

OK. Cancelled and ordered this. Thanks!
Hope you haven't canceled yet. What he said is incorrect. QLED is a vibrancy layer adhered to the panel to increase color vibrancy. Mini LED is the closest attempt we currently have to matching OLED contrast performance without the burn in drawbacks. Without seeing how he has his settings set up on his U7 we have no idea if it's set correctly or even turned on. Local dimming 1000% makes a difference (you're literally mirroring OLED by turning the LED off.. there's no way you can't tell a difference).

If you look at a TV its mostly plastic and a big sheet of glass/plastic with a bunch of electronics inside. Plastic is cheap. THe cost of electronics generally goes down over time.

Quick google, I found this page that gives an idea :
https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news...1685011590
Theres a chart in there that shows costs of making a 65" TV over time, projected. Looks like the actual material and production costs is like $300. Bet the actual cost to make a 85" is under $500. Note that page is about Samsung and TCL in China maybe even cheaper.
The other costs are indirect cost of sales and such for maybe $100. The other 'depreciation' cost is not really what I think is an actual real cost but the cost to recover their initial investment capital and production. So that figure is probably fungible.
You're arfument that these things are so cheap to make literally makes the case for these prices being amazing. You're already at almost 600 with your own numbers. Plus they have to ship it to best buy. Plus bb has to ship it to you. Now...how much is left for the manufacturer and the retailer to make a profit? TVs offer insane bang for the buck.

You'd have to be crazy or dumb to buy a TCL without that extra $200 geek squad plan.
Mom's TCL from 2015 still going strong. And she uses it everyday for multiple hours. Falls asleep with it on too.

I'd say you're dumb for thinking this, but probably crazy thinking that TCL isn't the 90's Honda Civic of the TV World. They are about 12% of the market share of market, and steadily growing. Highly doubt you get repeat customers or don't have longevity if your TV's are garbage.
