They are all the same. There are only 3 to 4 big factories in China producing these. All brands are just buying from the factories.

Their panels are not the good ones as quality monitor brand but ok. The plaatic structure is the main problem. None of them will survive if you jump a lot.

I bring mine in a backpack everyday on campus. My portable monitor is a no name brand from Amazon, but they are all the same, as the other post said. I use a very specific orientation in my backpack to keep the monitor protected. Laptop in it's sleeve then the screen in front, then a rigid notebook or folder followed by whatever else you want to toss in. I have a metal laptop stand, portable battery, cables, chargers, I carry everything. I'm using a Herschel backpack so nothing fancy, but I do have more expensive $90 backpacks that just aren't as fashionable.

$115 at B&H Photo. No tax if you have their store credit card. So in theory, it'll only be about 5-10% more to buy from a retailer where you KNOW you won't be getting a counterfeit.

Also, it's $100 at Walmart too. And they don't commingle their inventory!

I got ZSCMALLS (completely random brand naming, I guess) for $70, and I really couldn't expect more. I've had it for about four months now. So, I'm not sure if it's worth spending more for an Asus.

lol this is completely inaccurate. More or less true for some of the cheaper products on the market. But to suggest that this is the same as those is completely ridiculous.

Quick look at the specs, what stands out is:
"250 nits Brightness"
this is a very poor quality screen for $100.

As an alternative: recently, there was a deal for Asus Vivobook, openbox for $200 at Staples, 17" screen with 250nits, powerful i5, iris x graphics, 8gb, 500gb, power supply, battery, windows11, etc.

You will get what you pay for.

And I can buy a 50" TV for $100 on Black Friday, which is about as relevant of a comparison. That Vivobook doesn't have the same usage case as a portable monitor.

Ordered a similar Asus model (MB16ACE) for the same price in 11/2020, it has been useful here and there since I have various PCs and Macs. However, having an additional input like mini-hdmi is something I wish mine had. This one doesn't have that as well.

Sorry if already covered, anyone know if this is truly a portable monitor (Ie. Doesn't need to be plugged into a power source via ac adapter, but rather will be powered by a laptop via usb-c)?

I don't know about others, but I'd prefer to lose 20% total laptop battery life to power the monitor vs having to hunt for a AC plug and table close to the wall. TIA

FWIW, the no-name brands I have bought in the past for $20 less have USB-C, USB-C pass thought, and mini HDMI. As said by others, image quality may be less on those, but the connectivity may matter based on use case.

I had no idea either until I started comparing these on Micro Center's website. You really have to look at the specs on these. Ended up going with a 17.3in, 8bit, 7ms Acer model they had as an open box item myself.

Most of these external monitors can be powered by a single usb-c cord, provided its the right type (3.1 I believe) and the source device supports AV over usb-c. I have a viewsonic one for instance, and a phone can power it. You do need external power when using HDMI input however, or external power can be used to reach the max brightness of the monitor.

I bought a laptop neoprene sleeve for mine and it's been fine.
