"XR" was always supposed to be for their top tools/batteries. New tech has shifted the battery tiers so relabeling makes sense.
Originally "XR" on a tool meant pro grade brushless for extra runtime and reliability (daily use). In a battery it originally meant higher current and capacity, often from a second parallel set of 18650 cylindrical cells ("2P5S" = 10 cells).
The 8AH PowerPack XR (DCB2108) is using 21700 cylindrical cells but so was the 8AH XR (DCB208) it replaces. The Samsung INR21700-40T cells in the DCB208 are switched out for some new "tab-less" cells in the DCB2108. The "tabs" it refers to are internal to the cell so they should be the same physical size (21700) and capacity (8AH total) but higher current. Maybe now it'll finally hit harder than the 6AH XR with 10x INR21700-30T cells.
Yes, 30T is lower capacity, higher current compared to 40T. Those same monster 30T cells are in the 9AH FlexVolt (3P5S; 15 cells), which explains why it does even better in 20V Max tools.
One minor correction: PowerPack is launching with XR branding, not rebranding with it. Ignoring the "PowerDetect" and "FlexVolt Advantage" nonsense that's on the way out, the "boost" any tool might get from an XR battery is usually just that they could've used the extra current all along.
For increasing current at the same voltage:
Different formulas in the same physical cell size can trade capacity for current (30T>40T>50S).
Physically larger cells increase current (21700 vs 18650).
More parallel cells increase current (6P5S 15AH FlexVolt with 30x 18650 cells versus 2P5S 5AH XR with a third of the same cells).
Tab-less cells increase current (8AH PowerPack XR versus 8AH XR).
Stacks of pouch cells with their wide tabs increase current (PowerStack).
There is an ID pin that distinguishes old 1P batteries from higher current (generally 2P+) batteries but even that doesn't align with the XR/non-XR badging or any of the PDetect/FV Advantage stuff. Heavy duty tools probably use it to reject a 1.3AH battery from a Black Friday drill bundle.
Distilling all that down:
6AH XR, 9AH FlexVolt, and 5AH PowerStack have been the beasts of the 20V Max line for a couple years now. We'll see if the new 8AH PowerPack XR will join them.
Eventually we'll get the AI-enhanced Pro Plus Max Ultra HD Double-X Platinum S 5G Red Edition Prime and it'll blow everything out of the water!

- In the battery cage in the Power Tools section.
- In the overstock above that cage (my store stored them inside plastic crates up there).
- In the outdoor power tools section or their endcaps (also worth checking the shop vac section).
- In the special power tool/seasonal display at the front of the store (if your store has one). I found there on a shelf with the outdoor tools in this display.
Ignore any prices on the shelf and have a clerk scan it. Mine were listed for $140 in the store front display and $200-something in the cage.
The guy that helped me was really surprised by the price and the Pro desk person that held them while I grabbed a few other things had no idea either.
Finally, all the stores in Chicago proper had ~2-3 in total. The burbs ~20 minutes south and southwest had "limited supply" - ~4 at almost every store. Heading north of the city, the burbs had plenty in the small locations and very few in the larger stores.
I lived in ATL for a few years, so I guess the equivalent would be north or northeast, headed towards Athens, for the best chance, and headed towards Marietta would be 2nd best. The airport being south of the city means you'd probably have to get out to Fayetteville to have a decent shot. At least if the trends here work there (thinking in terms of worker housing, economics, and travel routes).
Hope that helps.

Also, my area south and south west of the Atlanta perimeter is drying up. Newnan, GA and Peachtree City, GA are cleaned out. Brickseek says PTC has 6 but I didn't find any and the associates acknowledged that they sold out for $75.
I also found that the cage I originally photographed had ALL batteries removed except for a combo with charger in a box. They didn't seem to move elsewhere in the store so I don't know what's up with that. Suddenly, their selection of other DeWALT batteries got really poor.

The one by me (Kennesaw) was the one that said they had it on clearance. I haven't checked any others, but again i'm not in any desperate need to get one either.
DeWALT probably noticed that the higher price and lack of XR badging discourages 5AH PowerStack sales to pro customers conditioned to spend more for XR… they inadvertently buy the cheaper DCB205 despite inferior performance. Lo and behold, they are dropping XR badging from the old DCB205 and adding it to the 5AH PowerStack. It seems they are dropping XR from everything that isn't PowerStack or PowerPack.
For consistency I'd expect future XR tool bundles to include XR batteries like they always have. They haven't announced a 5AH PowerPack XR which probably means the 5AH PowerStack XR will quickly replace the DCB205 as their most popular battery. We'll see.
The 1.7AH PowerStack XR will likely get bundled with compact Atomic XR series tools like ratchets and the 3" cut-off tool (DCS438).
The 5AH PowerStack will get bundled with things like XR blowers, rotary hammers, and impacts (DCF961).
The 8AH PowerPack is already getting bundled with successors to the XR PowerDetect/FlexVolt Advantage saws, grinders, and hammer drills (DCD1007).
I don't know what they're doing with the new 3rd gen cordless electric mowers. The 2x 20V Max versions are still XR-badged even though the 10AH battery they bundle is losing that badging. If I were in charge they'd drop the 20V Max models entirely and stick with the new FlexVolt model. The first two gens of 20V Max mowers with under-powered and failure-prone 10AH XR were a huge fiasco unbecoming of the XR badge.

Was also the first time I used my DeWALT SDS Plus rotary hammer (DCH133) from last month's Lowe's clearance:

My total was $14.50 over this deal for both 4 months ago:

(Made up numbers to help make my point)
lets say the 5ah XR has a total run time of 15 min and a max airflow of 400 cfm but it can only maintain that airflow for 5 min. The powerstack also only has a run time of 15 min and a max airflow of 400 cfm but stays blowing at 400 cfm for the full 15 minutes. That would make the powerstack more efficient at competing the task.
That said, I only got my two DCB210 warranty replacements a few days ago even though I was originally told they were shipping in June. I suspect they were waiting for the new branding without "XR" so hopefully PowerStacks aren't backordered for similar reasons (adding "XR").

Thanks OP, snagged a coupleof these today for $65 each after military discount.
I tried repping you again, but SD won't allow it (too soon after initially repping you). 😯
