I don't know why everyone complains about this. This is pretty much always what you get for under $400. And 250 nits is perfectly fine for indoor use. I'm using a laptop with a 250 nit screen right now and I've got the brightness set to 10%.

Wish I could help. I haven't been able to understand the relative rankings of CPUs since the simple Pentium days of years ago. I think their nomenclature is designed to confuse.

I mean for a standard user, I can't imagine the screen being all that bad here. The specs are great for the money.

I don't mind nits, but coming from a TN panel, that is a deal breaker. I will return this if it ships. Meanwhile had agent via phone submit a cancellation request. Frown

Yeah, I was defending 250 nits as perfectly fine for indoor use, but TN is a no-go at any price point. I can't find anything in the text on Staples' or Asus' web site that says this is IPS. Only in the image on Staples' web site with the specs on it. Which is apparently the wrong image.

What's funny is that on the Staples website in the reviews section for this laptop, you don't have a single reviewer complaining about the screen quality. I have an order on the way and I'll provide some updates on what I really think about the screen come Friday afternoon.

The same image that says IPS also says it is a touch screen. So clearly that image is wrong.

I'm ordering this for a senior citizen. I doubt that they would even notice a difference between IPS and TN panels. I would have higher standards for myself, but when you have specs this good for the price, a TN panel really won't make a difference for someone who is inexperienced with top of the line PCs.

You're right. They won't know that if it was IPS they would not have such limited viewing angles to see it right. On my TN, I am always fiddling with the lid's angle since I use it in bed. At least the centering is easy for my head. It just sucks that so much detail is lost if the lid is not at just the right angle.
But in my opinion, this is overkill for an older person's gift. They wouldn't need this much in specs. I'd get them a cheaper one. But if you don't mind the cost, they should love it.

I already said TN is a no-go. But 250 nits is fine for indoor use with IPS. It just turns out that's not what this laptop has.

Feel free to point out a <$400 laptop with a display that's brighter than 250 nits, though. I don't think I've seen one.

Apparently, the person's record is stuck. 8 years here and this is what completely triggered them.

I just set mine up because they did not get it canceled in time. Nice other than the mediocre screen.
Another negative for me, being used to num pads, is that their zero key is not where I am accustomed to. I keep hitting the decimal point key. I will give it a tryout.

Okay processor coupled with a super slow ram and pathetic display = bad user experience.
Also intel is playing sinister game with naming of its processors. This intel 120u is based on older alder lake series.

Are people that mad about a TN panel on a cheap, cheap laptop with otherwise good specs? Bizarre.
