I don't know why everyone complains about this. This is pretty much always what you get for under $400. And 250 nits is perfectly fine for indoor use. I'm using a laptop with a 250 nit screen right now and I've got the brightness set to 10%.

Wish I could help. I haven't been able to understand the relative rankings of CPUs since the simple Pentium days of years ago. I think their nomenclature is designed to confuse.

Are people that mad about a TN panel on a cheap, cheap laptop with otherwise good specs? Bizarre.
Nope. Read the original post which claimed in the title (and still does at this time) that it is an IPS panel. That claim was based on a picture on the product page. OP still has not removed the false information. The SD moderator did omit it from their post when it was promoted. So now things are different with the thread going forward. This just got promoted to FP and edited.

Also, I do not consider a sale price of $379 as a cheap, cheap laptop. I consider it a tick above cheap, so that is 2 ticks above cheap, cheap. Better than basic, but with an IPS it would have been closer to mid-tier, IMO.

$379 is not normal for this one. It is a sale price. For $379 one may pass (knowing it is TN), or go ahead since it still is $100 less than some other recently posted deals on laptops with similar specs and IPS. I ordered with the false expectation before the truth came out. Could not get it canceled, and will give it a shot since it got delivered. IPS was part of my requirements, so it matters to me. The viewing angles for my use as previously mentioned, are a pain.

But again, the information was incorrectly stated, which was the big issue for many.

There is one person here who has come unglued about TN and nits though. Not a representation of us all, just because of their repeated blasting of the laptop being trash tier.

Fair enough. I see the confusion now. I just saw the word trash being thrown around like crazy. It still seems very suitable for a light user. One on the way for the mother in law. It should be plenty and only used indoors. I would be mind-blown if the screen doesn't work perfectly fine for someone like that.

You're right. They won't know that if it was IPS they would not have such limited viewing angles to see it right. On my TN, I am always fiddling with the lid's angle since I use it in bed. At least the centering is easy for my head. It just sucks that so much detail is lost if the lid is not at just the right angle.
But in my opinion, this is overkill for an older person's gift. They wouldn't need this much in specs. I'd get them a cheaper one. But if you don't mind the cost, they should love it.
Yeah the cost here is already cheap enough and the specs (aside from the display) are great. I always enjoy getting people slightly over spec'd PCs because technology advances so quickly and it's better to have an overpowered machine that will still run decent in years to come. I've noticed that older people tend not to upgrade their PCs until it's already way past overdue anyways. Higher specs will help them get more worth out of it in the long run.

I'm not sure what you mean by cheap...cheap...cheap...sure, you can get a laptop with a pentium processor for $150 or $200. What we are saying is for a laptop with the newest 14th genration processor AND 16GB the $379 price point is really cheap...you are probably not going to find that anywhere else.

Specs are still good for the price even with a TN panel, although it's not a great deal since the TN panel is kinda a big bummer. I think around $300 would make this a great deal.

For anyone considering getting this in store, ALWAYS call your Staples store first and have them check the storage room if they actually have it. The inventory on the Staples website is worthless...the number they say the store has is rarely correct.

This is how you deal with seniors and laptops. They won't miss what they don't know about. They will appreciate ease of use and snappy performance. I am typing this on mine right now and so far I can live with it, but nighttime in bed will be the real test of this panel for me.
Repped for your thoughts.
As a matter of fact, I got my Mom a laptop and provided her with a big external monitor and wireless kbd/mouse to replace her PC a few years ago. Older eyes like bigger screens. Even if her laptop had an IPS screen, she would need readers for it.

The person is throwing their hatred around like no one read the first 10 times they complained (so you're spot on).

hey all, so I have an ancient laptop that I bought used for $100 2 years ago. I use for one reason only, I have a golf simulator and I use that laptop to run Kinovea (https://www.kinovea.org) to record my swing from two different angles. But...for whatever reason, more recently, it won't allow me to do this with the 2nd USB camera. I'm thinking it has to do with the fact that the machine is ancient. Would the specs of this machine allow me to do that? Here are the minimum specs for Kinovea (https://www.kinovea.org/download.html)

I see all the comments on this thread re: the monitor, that'd be a non-issue for me as I would connect the laptop to a travel monitor that I have in front of me so that I can see my swings replaying.

More than enough machine for this task.

Just to be clear. This is a TN display. I bought it and returned it due to this.
