Ugh... To see Pioneer on a crap-tastic TV is depressing. To think they were the pinnacle of TV's back in Kuro days...

It's like Nakamichi too...

I had this tv for a couple of days. Had to return it because the picture quality was terrible. Spend a little more and get a TCL

Seems like they're prone to panel failures within a year.

Picked up the 50" for 200 from BB yesterday for a basic TV until I get a nice one for the living room in my new move. The price has stuck. Its behaving as it should, hope it lasts at least a few years.

Worth noting I got 6 months of Peacock Premium free with it ($48) for new EPL soccer season which I was planning to get anyway, so saved even more money.

It really is sad isn't it? All the original American TV brands from way back ( RCA, Magnavox, Zenith, and Westinghouse) and almost all the top tier Japanese TV brands from the 90's and 2000's (Toshiba, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, Sanyo, Sharp, Panasonic, JVC, and Pioneer) are gone. I'm actually surprised Sony is still staying in the game.

Now the choices are pretty much the South Korean manufacturers, (Samsung and LG), Vizio, or all kinds of Chinese TVs. I know the Koreans, and now the Chinese have pretty much pushed the research and innovation bubble, but I still find it hard to believe that we as consumers aren't losing out by having more choices, especially now that all those very high quality Japanese brands are no longer in the mix.

You could argue that innovation is happening, and that it's shaking out that other companies aren't able to compete. The US in particular has this view that even monopoly isn't necessarily bad. It's preferable as long as they don't use their position to prevent others from competing.

Monopoly means efficiency is reached. We know in truth it's rarely that, but none the less that's the view of our government.

You're right our politicians don't seem to mind a good old monopoly at all. It doesn't seem to matter which party or person is in charge, they're all more than happy to take their handouts from the lobbyists and sell the American consumer down the river. Corporate consolidation has gone out of control for the last 30yrs. We can claim we live in a free market economy all we want, but at the end of the day when you take a long look around, there are less and less corporations controlling more and more.

But at the same time, you're also right that maybe if Panasonic, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, etc. had sunk a little money and research into flat panel Tech instead of holding onto their CRT domination they'd still be in the TV game.

So, I wasn't talking about politicians at all. I was actually talking about our regulation and their view of monopolies. It's hard to argue, because it's not like it's not true. I mean, if we had a single supplier of something, that supplier could be optimized more than optimizing a bunch of separate organizations. In theory, if we applied all the research into working together on R&D, we'd be better off, right?

Now that starts to sound eerily like communism, and we know that doesn't work in practice. In theory though, it's probably the best system.

So capitalism and monopolies are the same. The problem is, there's judgment call on where the line is of what is okay, and what is not. What is tolerable, because the benefits outweigh it.

Point is, it's a lot more nuanced. Sometimes regulation to try and fix it, causes unintended negative consequences as well. Ultimately, the problem isn't politicians or even the government.

The problem is humans. We have a desire to be better than our neighbor, to demand more materialism and wealth. Why do you think a person is far more likely to be happy living in the nicest house in the crappiest street, rather than live in the crappiest house in the nicest neighborhood?

With that said, yes politicians get bribed and paid by lobbyist. However, you cannot operate without lobbyist either, so you have to take a stance on some things, and let others go. That's the reality of it, and is the pragmatic approach. Right or wrong.

After all, how many of us sit here and say we could do a better job, only to be chewed out by the system and end up doing the same?

On top of that, the popular policies aren't necessarily the best or appropriate policies either. Just look at our own system. We have laws in place to protect free speech, but that leaves the government powerless to fight fake information that is hurting all of us.

Again, the problem is humans, and what we value and our beliefs that results in actions.

I don't have the answer. Only issues. 😭

Pioneer, a great brand. They're destroying it by licensing it to make crappy TVs.

What the heck happened at Pioneer? They use to be the (one of the) leaders in this space. Kuro! And their plasmas were awesome.

Got the 55" for my mom a while back to replace an old 32". She's happy with it and for the price, it's really a great value. She just needed something big enough to see text on screen and had the apps she needed. This was perfect for her bedroom.
