Hue is the best residential lighting that money can readily buy. Your anecdotal experience is in the one percent.

It is much better than the Feit bulbs, which start flashing when they lose memory.

I used this in outdoor in Southern California hot sun and cold night, they work flawlessly for close to 5 yrs already.

Personally, I found these (philips hue smartbulbs, not this specific item) to be a huge pain in the ass. If I left them off for too long, they'd lose memory of the wifi and flash angrily until I could call them on the phone. Swapping back to normal LED bulbs was a huge relief.
I never have those kind of problems with Philips, every other brand I do though

Nice to know that. How about the rainy season
I use it in outdoor light fixture, not exposed to rain directly of course. Rain pretty good last year in Southern California, no problem.
They are the most stable and reliable smart lights imo.

I have had the phillips hubs and bulds siince like approximately 2016 when it came out. It used to work great but with a the updates i find it more trouble than just buying brands that just work with Alexa. The company will literally shut down your lights if you dont update the app and accept their changes. I personally dont think this is a great deal since i have purchased full kits at this price back in 2020 . I dtill have kits with the dimmer switch. They do last I have replaced a few since 2016 and a few of the blub caps have fallen off.

Thanks OP. In for 8 bulbs. I've been slowly accumulating Hue bulbs over the past 3 years. One of the last things that I need to convert over is the chandelier in our house's entry way. My wife constantly complains that me and our son leave it on and she has to hit the switch to turn it off. This is cheap enough for me to get her to stop being on our case about it.

Does anyone know if you can control these with a caseta switch? I actually have hubs for both but would like the hue bulbs to turn on and off with the caseta switches

I don't think so, only the Aurora (of the Lutron products)

Pretty much all brands work with Alexa and many of them suck, as most are WiFi and not zigbee. If you bought a full kit new for $17 (which I kinda of doubt), then it was a bulb and a dinner switch, not a hub. Also, it doesn't shutdown your system if you don't update your app. I set up a hue for my mom a few years ago and I only recently realized that her hub software was out of date. She'd never had an issue because she doesn't use the app (or own a smartphone)
The dimmers had been controlling the lights via the hub flawlessly the whole time.

I have rarely had any issues with the Hue bulbs losing the network because they use a hub. I've had all kinds issues with other brands. The Hues are expensive, but worth it compared to many of the other brands. I think I have about 50 seat bulbs in my house right now.

Good:
Hue
Lightingside (nicely inexpensive, too, but still on full wifi and not a hub which can bog down the wifi)

Bad:
Wiz (loses the wifi like crazy)
Feit (frequently can't find the wifi in the first place.)

I'm conflicted.

On one hand, the hue bulbs are really nice. They are well made, the dimming is good, the light quality is good.

But IMHO, bulbs are consumables (even LEDs fail) and it seems silly to have your smart home control pieces be tied to consumables rather than permanent fixtures or switches. Especially since it makes it easier to operate for guests, for power/internet issues etc to still have physical switches.

But hue won't integrate with other physical hardware. They only work with their own little non-switches…
What kind of technology do you think are in "permanent" fixtures?

For what it's worth, 30 or so bulbs collected since ~2009. Haven't had a single bulb die yet.

In the same way ANY bulb can be turned on with a caseta switch. Of course.

Yeah they're kind of a pain, especially if the power goes out.
You can program hue bulbs to do nearly whatever you'd like them to do if the power goes out.

Which brand of smart bulb has a better options set?

I've gone through about half a dozen different Smart bulbs and always come back to Hue when I need something mission critical. Where I live there are frequent power outages, especially on stormy nights. We got tired of being awoken in the night because the smart bulb couldn't remember what it was doing before the power went out and it came on at full brightness. Hue are the only bulbs that I trust no function like an actual smart bulb and remember what it was doing when the power went out. The zigbee network they create is as stable as anything else in my smart home. Plus they'll integrate with anything. Google and Alexa: check. Smartthings and Hubitat: easy peazy. Home assistant: possibly the easiest integration I've done.
Yes, they're expensive, especially the color bulbs which are just stupidly expensive. But they're pretty much the only ones my wife will allow in the house.

Sorry, I was on mobile and sort of conflated issues there.

My problem with permanent fixtures (e.g. fixtures that have their own LEDs built in, but also fixtures that use bulbs that Hue doesn't make an option for) is that there's no simple way to tie them in with a hue system.

In my previous rental, there were a couple of fixtures like this, including one I *REALLY* wanted smart control over...trivial to swap in a smart dimmer switch, but then you couldn't use it within the hue ecosystem. Easy to do a switch swap in a rental, not so easy to swap light fixtures (especially if they have different footprints and you don't have any matching wall paint).

In theory there are some zigbee switches or relays out there that can sort of work with Hue, but information is scarce and they are hard to source.

Hue could EASILY solve this by making (or licensing) a compatible smart switch and/or a smart plug, but they won't do it because they know someone would buy a single switch for a room full of ceiling cans rather than buying 8 individual hue bulbs.
