as for the TRUST test it's easy, common sense and you can do it in about an hour. this is my notes for:
- getting recreation certification with FAA
- registering my drone
- getting the TRUST test and passing it (free)
if you set aside time for all the paper work everything will take about 3-4 hours. it's a matter of signing up for sites.
also get this app call "Air Aware" it shows where you can and can't fly. (keep you out of trouble).
Just get this done and you don't have to constantly worry about what you can and can't do and where.
Even if you get a mini drone that is under 250gram and can fly without registering I still recommend you take the TRUST test prevent you from being one of those jackarses that gets a new drone and fly all over the place without any consideration for safety / air space and other flyers or restricted areas

With the plus battery, it activates remoteID which broadcasts your GPS coordinates and the location of your controller, among other things. There's nobody actively looking for this information if you're not flying in controlled airspace.
That said, assuming you don't have any incidents / accidents, it's likely no one but you will ever know you broke the rules.
Over 249g you need registration as you indicated, but TRUST is a requirement for everyone. Although I'm sure half of the drone owners have never even heard of it.
I flew for a few months before I learned about it. It's very quick and easy, FYI, and basically just common sense. I liken it to a fishing license, a small hassle that will likely never be needed but will save you from hefty fines if you ever did need it and didn't have it.
Anyone buying drones look at the recent bans the US plans to place on Chinese drones. It's not looking pretty, sold my 3 Pro cause of this. So many "man I wish I had my drone" moments

Should have kept it.

Just like they did with the note 9 that exploded it just stopped charging for example via an ota update.

With that said, I definitely think you jumped the gun. I'm going to buy a mini 4 pro when I find the right deal (currently have mini 2).
Let's be honest, when was the last time our government ever did anything, let alone did it quickly? We don't even know what they intend to do (ban future sales, ground everything, etc.) but I'd be willing to place a large wager that it doesn't happen anytime in the near future...
To each their own. Cheers!
