Nothing.
If your son is going to be using it for most normal types of college work (research, writing papers, online classes, a few dozen chrome tabs etc.), this is a great option.
If he is going to be doing graphic intense work (web/graphic design, advertising, engineering, etc.) or playing AAA games, then you will need something with a beefier graphics card.
Overall, the specs are great for the price and the components are the current generation. The build quality should be solid (with an aluminum chassis), and the 2 in 1 feature is nice.
Good luck to your son, and I hope he excels in whatever he is studying and makes you proud.

Amazing that there are still some parts of the internet where people are cool to one another. Thank you to everyone on the thread, and thanks to you for the kind words about my son. I fully expect him to kick much ass in college, he's the best a dad could ask for.

I'm not a computer person.

I need a basic laptop for online conferences, mostly.

This one from costco is $50 more...is it $50 better?

Thanks

The Envy is a higher tier model than the bottom Pavilion. There is really nothing better on the market for this money (~500-600 range) than the two models on sale at BB - the 14" is also on sale btw. Their cameras are good.

1080P on a 16" is unbearable. You will see pixels...
its $500 new, hard to find 4k screen with this budget. 1400p maybe.

Dell used to sell 4k OLED for $300 last year with 32GB

1080p looks good on 13 to 14 inch

If you want durable laptops

Costco sometimes have the Lenovo Thinkpad on sale for $600-800.

Dell Outlets Latitude $600 , HP Elitebook or Roll the Dice for Used Dell for $300

These regular HP, Lenovo, Acer/Asus last if you open and close your lid often or travel with it.

Costco is one best places to buy laptops $400

Bought local open box fair for $443+tax - no packaging, just the laptop and usb-c charger.

The spec is pretty good - the core ultra is a significant upgrade from the 12-13th gen in graphics and power efficiency (hence better battery life).

Build seems solid and sturdy with alum case - the only thing is the weight. But often times weight and sturdiness are something you cannot have both. Smilie

Costco has 2 year warranty with bigger hard disk might be useful if kids break some thing

But bestbuy model is a 2-in-1 which I know kids like that style

Specs directly from HP indicate 68 WH battery, not 59 WH. Pretty big difference which makes this an even better deal. Makes sense since the Costco Pavilion (lower tier HP) has 59 WH battery. Envy tier is always better spec'd than Pavilion. I'm glad to see manufacturers are finally putting bigger batteries in even entry level laptops. I've been a big fan of Lenovo laptops for this reason. Even most of their lower tier models have relatively big batteries. I have a 14" Lenovo slim Pro with a 73 Wh battery. It's a higher tier model, but for a 14" laptop 73 Wh is awesome.

4-cell, 68 Wh Li-ion polymer

This looks like a slick price for a slick product.
Thanks for link to the HP official specs.

Found the link to the official spec. sheet on the BestBuy product page.
It clearly says:
Display: 16-inch diagonal, WUXGA (1920 x 1200), multitouch-enabled, IPS, edge-to-edge glass, microedge, 300 nits, 62.5% sRGB

I've been keeping an eye out for HP Elitebook x360 models refurbished but totally forgot HP had envy x360 models. 😮 nice to know there's other options. I see some of them are ryzen. The Elitebook series are all Intel and that's super lame as the only choice.

This nice review convinced me to buy an open box fair for $443: https://youtu.be/muBCmb7Lczc?si=stvuQV9ewqsQPyfm
No heat problem surfing the web and listening to YouTube music video - very fast, not sluggish at all. no fan noise concern. The audio at home is much nicer, richer than in the store with the laptop on my chest and speakers tilted to my face. The bass is not heavy, but the balance is nice and clear. Nice battery life. No oily fingerprint smudge because of the silver metal but it may get scratched easier. Roomy keyboard spacing. This is my eighth laptop this year, i am impressed this 16" version managed heat better than the 14" sibling also on sale for cheaper today. I'm glad I didn't pay more for other 12th or 13th gen deals.

It's heavier than other 14" ultra portables I hardly felt any weight resting on my leg/belly/chest.

I selected a new windows install instead of from backup and there's no extra software from HP. I'm able to see the estimated battery life remaining time & %.

Other laptops maybe brighter and colorful but I'm fine with the resolution balance here for the battery life as I will mostly be using it indoor. The battery reports several grades above manufacture capacity rating.

The screen is glossy, reflection can be problematic if you have a lot of windows or bright light.

No idea about reliability as it was just purchased a few hours ago.

Looking for a laptop, what kind of graphics card is good or what should I be looking for
