The full specs for this laptop can be found here: https://psref.lenovo.com/Detail/I...82QC006KUS

This is a pretty good deal at $200, and an obscenely incredible deal at $100 if you're able to get the ymmv $100 off any laptop microcenter coupon as mentioned below. The processor is decent for a low end laptop, and the only huge downside is the abysmal tn screen.

To my knowledge it is still possible to get the microcenter $100 off any laptop coupon as described in this deal: https://slickdeals.net/f/17573511-microcenter-100-off-any-laptop-coupon
You must be a "new customer" (aka. make a new account with a valid mobile phone number) to be eligible for the coupon. I was personally able to replicate it just a few weeks ago, and the latest comment confirms the coupon was still available just two days ago. If the method in the deal post doesn't work for you, the method I personally was able to obtain the $100 coupon with was through the following steps: Connect your phone solely to your mobile network (t-mobile in my case, make sure you aren't connected to wifi). Use chrome with the setting to permit pop-ups and redirects enabled (in the "content" subsection of "site settings", popups are blocked by default in mobile chrome). Open up an incognito tab with the exact url linked in that deal post, give the microcenter website permission to access location, and scroll down the page. If the pop up doesn't appear, or if it gives a different offer besides the "$100 off any laptop", close chrome and try again. It may take several tries for a pop-up to appear, and the $100 off any laptop offer pop-up seems to be rarer than the other offers.

The i3-1215u is a decent low end cpu, it's technically a 6-core processor but only has 2 performance cores, the other four are e-cores. The 12th gen alder lake architecture was a major leap in terms of intel processors, the i3-1215u has performance in a similar tier to the 11th gen i7-1165g7. For general purpose use (web browsing, basic office productivity, etc.) it should be sufficient, and vastly exceeds the "celeron" or "athlon" processors you'll usually see at this price tier.

The screen in this laptop is downright awful. Being tn means viewing angles are abysmal, the brightness of 220nits is even lower than the standard low end 250nits you'll see in budget laptops, and gamut coverage of 45%ntsc (~62% srgb) means colors will appear dull and washed out. The only saving grace is this laptop's price, at $200 the screen is only a major demerit, not an instant dealbreaker.

Having 8gb of soldered ddr4 3200 ram with an additional sodimm slot is good for this price range, being able to upgrade to 16gb in the future is a major plus. The 256gb gen 4 ssd is also good for the price, since at $200 you're still at the range that a**hole manufacturers will try to pawn off emmc e-waste storage onto customers. This laptop has a single m.2 2280 gen4 x4 slot occupied by the 256gb ssd. The other miscellaneous specs and ports of this laptop are decent for a budget laptop, and excellent for $200.

This laptop comes with windows in "s" mode by default, you can switch out of s mode for free by following the steps on this page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-...Windows_11

Overall, this laptop would be an incredible deal at $200 if the screen wasn't so terrible, but for those for whom the screen isn't a dealbreaker, this laptop at $200 still reaches the level of a pretty good deal. If you're able to get the $100 off laptop coupon as mentioned above, this laptop is an absurdly good deal at $100.

For comparison, this processor is 50% faster than a i5-6400, a desktop processor that is still running today in way too many builds 😂… this is like a Restomod Model T.

Yeah this is even cheaper than the asus vivobook deal bestbuy has every few weeks. The plus on this is 256gb vs the 128gb on the asus vivobook. I think 256gb is sufficient for basic use without having to drop another 30$ to upgrade storage.

Anti-8GB-ram is now a religion for some. Smilie

Well, I have one Lenovo Ideapad 8GB with same CPU (another model though) - have not felt any slowdown during my routine work.

The religion is a poisonous cult for sure. Smilie

8GB soldered and thus not upgradable makes this e-waste instantly.

Screen - 30 nits difference. Might not be noticeable to some. Not nothing but also not major.

WiFi 6 vs 6e - Recognized but, at least in my situation, the limiting factor is the ISP speed and not the newest standard. Per Speedtest, my years old router is matching my Spectrum internet package's claimed speed.

Price - Open box is not the same as new. Looked at that option in my area and the cheapest open box was $197 and that was only in "fair" condition, meaning it could have missing items like a charger.

We may simply disagree and that is ok. From decades of using this website, I've learned that there is ALWAYS a better deal somewhere! Granted, not everyone has a Microcenter nearby, but what I liked was that there was only one of the open box used Best Buy's computers within a wide area of me and yet my local Microcenter has 25 of the new posted laptops in stock.
In my opinion, Asus offers better usability with more brightness, 180-degree opening and number pad

Just "No" to TN displays
At this price, just plug in a mouse, keyboard, and screen and treat it like a mini PC. With the bonus that you can take it mobile if you need to.

It's not a great laptop, and I agree it's a terrible screen, but it's basically a current Gen architecture computer with upgradeable RAM for a great price. If you need a cheap PC, I'm not seeing anything better than this right now.

I have one. Geekbench single thread score is close to 2000 and it plays HD YouTube perfectly. Screen is meh but usable - it's fine for the price. It's basically being used as a mini-pc and it's probably going to be fine for years.

Edit Geekbench is:2032 Single Core, 4637 multi-core

I actually own two Asus laptops so it's not that I am negative toward the brand.

The link which you provided is interesting but doesn't actually address the exact model that you are advocating. Regarding the numeric keypad, note that your link states it to be optional. Furthermore, on the Best Buy website, the manufacturer pictures do not show a numeric keypad. The first customer provided image shows it but the reviewer describes it as "absolutely horrible" and "the most poorly designed feature I've seen on a laptop in my 30 years of owning, buying, selling and servicing laptops". Near the bottom of the Specifications section, the Best Buy website specifically states that the product does not have a numeric keypad. It's not the first or last time that Best Buy's website may not be in sync with the actual product. As a career finance professional, I strongly prefer computers with a numeric keypad, just not this one.

Wholeheartedly agree. I plan to buy one for a niece with an ancient desktop. Her needs are simple, which this meets. At just $200, I won't feel guilty giving it to her versus others in the family.

On the Asus 14" models, the numeric keypad is usually built into the touchpad.

See attached.

The screen is going to be hard to see in brightly lit rooms. But in a pinch, it's usable.

Bought this as a personal laptop (have a nice desktop and a nice work laptop) from Target back in October 2022 for $270. Been happy with it. Not watching movies on it, but for browsing the internet, getting some work done, etc, its been great. Mine was just a slightly different color and had BT 5.0 instead of BT 5.1. Target sells both now I think.

Has anyone been able to get into the advanced/hidden BIOS? I'm not sure if it has one but everything I try that I've found online doesn't work.

ASUS also has a BIG problem with the hinges being too tight and breaking on these Vivobooks.

I have 2 of similar ASUS laptops (slightly higher spec) and one of them is in a really bad shape with cracks around the screen corners. ASUS is refusing to honor the warranty.
ASUS definitely crimps their budget laptops leading to issues.

I've owned all of the major brands Lenovo, HP, Dell and ASUS. I can say for a fact that the worst experience has been with ASUS and Dell.

Yes, but... how does this compare to Gateway 2000 laptops?

Had my mom get this one (or a very similar one) last year I think it was from Microcenter. She's had zero issues with it. And that's all I need to know, as her 2 previous Dell cheapos bit the dust after a year. This one might be better, but they were both $200. She's in her late 70's btw.
