2.5 HDDs are totally a thing, just not really used or worth it anymore. They have been in laptops since before the rise of SSDs. I still have a few 250gb 2.5 spinners lying around collecting dust.
How are 2.5 HDDs not a thing? I have a 300GB WD black 2.5 in disk drive. Not to be confused with my solid state drives.
Add 1-2 zeros and you got an Apple storage upgrade

8TB and 16TB 2.5 SSD are a thing. They just cost a lot. But samsung makes a 870 QVO 8TB for $625. But it is QLC. However it should outlive a high capacity 2.5 HDD. TEAMGROUP EX2 16TB SSD is a bit pricy and hard to find. But i have seen it for around $1800-$2400.
I think they were talking about the capacity. Seagate makes 4TB and 5TB 2.5" HDD but they're also like 15mm thick. Most development for larger capacities will be for 3.5" HDDs as well as SSDs.

You're right, I thought they were confusing SSDs and forgot smaller spinners were even a thing.
I think the whole point was that back then spinning HDD main advantage was that they stored so much more data and were cheaper. Now SSDs can store even more data in a smaller form factor which is pretty cool to see.

Mechanical drives still win on data density and cost, even if it's becoming less so on portable devices.

For servers and archival storage, mechanical drives and tape are still most widely used.

But even for personal bulk storage, you really shouldn't be relying on NAND. It doesn't shelve as well as a mechanical drive and data recovery is near impossible.

This is absolutely FANTASTIC! We FINALLY have 8 tb ssds. As someone who uses massive storage for movies, games, and recordings. I will buy 4of these within the next 3-4 years.

I know but they are typically 1 to 2 TB at the most, I have several of them, not worth it
I have a 5TB 2.5" spinner, shucked it out of a Seagate external awhile back. Think I paid $100 for it several years ago. I put it into an acer predator 17" gaming laptop, and had to go with Seagate because it was only 9mm thick I believe, and the 2.5" bay in that machine wouldn't hold anything thicker

This will pair nicely with the PS5 Pro that I can't justify buying either.

Gen-5 will get more popular next year with RW speed exceeding 1.3GB/s. Samsung started mass production already. Expect gen-4 price to further go down. I use 2xgen4 raid.
I assume you mean 13GB/s. Even for a Gen 4, 1.3GB/s is pretty slow….

As soon as I hit the lottery I'm getting one.
Already have 4TB NVMe.
Ones and zeroes with plenty of space.
Bring on GPT, bye, bye MBR.

I picked up an 8tb samsung 870 qvo 2.5" sata SSD a while ago. I got it when drives were cheap for $329, at the current prices this is only slightly more expensive then the QVO and much faster with a longer lifespan. There are not too many 8tb consumer SSD options
Got a couple of the 8TB QVO drives last year for under $250 last year with sales, and samsung discounts (medical, edu), and Chase CC cash back offers they had at the time. I've been running them in a storage tower together with a couple 4TB EVO drives to record surveillance camera footage. One might think durability is not good enough for continuous write applications, but reality is that the cameras have a pretty low data rate and are spread across multiple drives.

There is no way that spinning disk has more data density by volume, only form factor. Costs is the only factor, a handful of companies keep prices high with no consequence or oversight. I'm stunned we're still talking about HDDs a decade later, they're horrible. Seek times make it feel like your PC is broken. Copy times will put you in the grave.
