It doesn't matter if the "managers of caught onto it". It's not breaking any policy and is explicitly written on the receipt the return value of each individual item. Sure manager may go rogue and refuse to take the return, but they could also refuse to honor a genuine sale price too. This is not something that is going on unnoticed by HD corporate. They specifically enable it by TELLING YOU ON THE RECEIPT the value of each item. That is true for in-store receipts as well as online receipts. DeWalt pays for the free gifts, not HD. HD has clearly come to the conclusion that selling these items prorated and allowing individual returns increases turnover and maximizes their profits. It is naive to think that a company making over $150B in sales a year with over $15B in earnings, would not notice this practice going on when they have continuously offered it for the last decade with multiple BOGO sales from multiple manufacturers at any time. And, again, if they didn't know it was going on, how could they have specifically programmed their IT infrastructure to enable it, not just to passively permit it.

These prorated deals are not hacks in the sense of using an unforeseen loop but they are Honest And Completely Kosher deals!

This 4Ah has been around for quite a few years. It's the "compact" version (DCB240). They have always offered the regular 4Ah (DCB204) alongside it in their line. The compact version uses 5 21700 cells in series in a single layer, whereas the DCB204 (and the 5Ah DCB205) are two in-parallel layers of 5 18650 cells in series. For a long time the DCB240 was my go-to battery because of its compact size, long runtime and reasonable current draw. However, even though they use 21700 cells, they still don't have the current of a DCB204/5 which have the two parallel layers of 18650.

FWIW, my current go-to battery is the POWERSTACK 1.7Ah (DCBP034) because of its even more compact size and decent power draw, since run time is often a lower priority for me.

Can we return battery and keep the tool prorated?
As long as you don't call it a "hack."

Does the 4ah battery look small to anyone else? I have a couple and some 5ah ones too. They are essentially the same size. I wonder if these are newer 4ah batteries with a smaller footprint.

Yes you can.
Really need to say "yes, you can try but it's not guaranteed".

I hate when people post HD hack deals because not all HD's will do it as the managers have caught onto it. It really needs to be YMMV.

I had that blower. I replace a first-generation EGO with it because I wanted to reduce my number of battery platforms. The DeWalt was slightly smaller than the EGO, but louder and way underpowered. I would characterize this DeWalt as mediocre at best. I ended up switching to the 60V MAX blower which is far better (but also bigger and heavier). So, I guess my advice is that if you need to be on DeWalt then this one does the job but is a bit underwhelming.

Thanks for all that. Do you know if the DCB240 fits on a drill driver or impact driver with the belt hook attached? Or is it too wide?

Yes, on newer tools. When I first got mine, I had some of the first 20V MAX tools and it didn't work on those, but they widened the belt clip at least five years ago to accommodate these. Even if you have an older tool, you just can purchase one of the newer belt clips for a few dollars (currently $10 for two at [amazon.com]).

All that and yet there are still people being turned away for attempting the prorate/hack so it's wise to just say YMMV. It's not a guaranteed "deal".

Just don't pick up the second item, no reason to get a manager involved. People have been successfully using the "hack" for over 40 years, it's not that hard.

Okay, but did you read the OP? I wrote the title as $199 for battery kit with free tool. There's nothing YMMV about that. Then I broke down how the items price out. There's nothing YMMV about that - that's simply what it says on the receipt. In no place in the OP did it say that you should be buying both items and returning one part. If people want to do that, that's up to them (and in alignment with HD's return policy), but there's nothing YMMV about this OP (other than the ongoing website glitches).

Looks like they have a 6ah flexvolt battery. So you can get a regular 6ah, 4ah and a 6ah (flexvolt which does the same thing as 6ah) for $200?
