You can buy a $1 simcard at a local retailer (Dollar general, family dollar, etc) or online at amazon, bestbuy, or target.
It probably has to do with history. But, even today the system will tell on you like a North Korean and horrible things will happen to your account. Curious? Check out the reddit horror stories about sim swapping and losing your promotional pricing and account.

I called customer service and was told that they are not allowed to contact the porting group and all will be fine tomorrow. Such BS from Total rep who I could barely understand. Treat the customer like a fool to shove the problem down the line..
At the end of the day I am out the $30 to Total and risk getting my phone number at T-Mobile rendered inactive if I do not pay for the next month service on time. I will have to charge the $30 back to Total as they do not refund funds for lines they never activate.

select "keep your own phone" then "keep your own number" and select the number you want to assign the new phone to. They will send a text to the number with a verification code, then after you put it in, it should ask for the simcard / imei number and proceed to finalize the process.
