Has a fingerrprint reader.
Not an IPS panel.
No backlit keyboard.

Just sharing this info to help others save time looking for these features as I always check. No need to be snarky about the data I am providing with your "What do you expect for $250?"

I expect to have the data on the specs before I decide.

thank you for taking the time to share. IPS screen is important, but few things irritate me more than a non-lit keyboard. lol

Should I wait for a different deal.

I just need something that will be fast for only internet use only.
Never had one with back lighting on a keyboard. But do have some eyesight problems. So not sure if it makes a difference.
Thanks for any suggestions.

No gaming, or other resource heavy stuff like photoshop, video editing etc needed.

1) Is this ssd m.2 SATA or NVME? Couldn't find in the specs

2) this processor supports ddr5 ram but not sure if motherboard supports it? (For potential future upgrade to 16gb ddr5)

Word yes, excel depends on what you're doing with it. If you're going to run some formulas and have very large volumes of data, then this laptop wouldn't be sufficient long term.

Google search shows "256GB M.2 NGFF (2280) PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 Solid State Drive"

Ram installed is DDR4, you'll only be able to add more DDR4.

This is fine for your needs. A backlit keyboard may not address your sight problems, however, it's really a nice treat. There should be lots & lots of under $300. laptops in the coming weeks.

i keep trying and failing to understand which laptops are good deals and which aren't. there are way too many factors to consider. I'm looking for a touchscreen, 14-17 inch display, backlit keyboard, 8 gigs of ram (prefer extra empty slot), with a good cpu (work apps) and amazing battery. for under 300

and i dont know which of these aspects, when being compromised, is worth giving up per the value/

"Work Apps", don't know what all that entails as related to a CPU as all I do is surf the web etc., so may can't help you there, however, I am willing to offer my limited advice/knowledge. When a deal comes up in which you have interest, just contact me. Still, "empty slot", "backlit", "touch screen" for under $300, you're kinda pushing the boundaries here in most cases, IMO, so you may have to jack it up 50 bucks or so, however, lots of deals will manifest themselves in the coming weeks.

Just to add to the other person's advice, you will benefit from a backlit keyboard if you use it in lowlight situations. If you never do, no worries.
Another big selling point you will see time and time again is IPS screens are so much easier on your eyes. If you have one with a TN panel, your viewing angle will really make a difference but just a smidge on how good colors and clarity can be. With IPS, so much more forgiving and much less eye-strain. I had been putting up with a TN for years and my eyes would get sore after only a few minutes to half an hour in bed, plus it was hard to get the angle as good as possible for me since it was always being opened and closed when used. If you left it on your desk open at all times or hooked up to a nice external monitor, it wouldn't be as big a deal.

I agree that your price expectation is low for your checklist. If you go with a Chromebook, you'd have a better chance. They have very little storage, but need less RAM, and you could get more features packed in for the price.

You will see in every laptop thread good and bad points and it is always a compromise, because there are so many varying options. I think it is better to compromise than to custom build and pay retail.

If you put up a checklist and asked 100 SD members what their wants and needs are you'd get that many different answers. But here we come, bitching about one or two things every laptop deal is missing to be worthy for us. Over the years I've fine-tuned my checklist and can't remember ever finding the unicorn I would love to have at a slick enough price. So I compromise.

My checklist:
  • Price range $300-$400 for Windows or about $100 less for a Chromebook with a delete key. Many do not come with one!
  • 15.6 to 17-inch screen.
  • Num pad included
  • 8GB RAM minimum and preferably expandable. 16GB is a sweet spot.
  • Decent CPU 12th or 13th gen i3 or better.
  • Backlit kbd. TIP: Dell Inspiron don't have this feature lately. So not much use in me looking at the deals for them.
  • IPS screen. Nothing less than 1080p resolution if 15.6 inch.

Preferably not Lenovo, based on seeing hinge complaints. Wife had one a few years back that the touch screen konked out on after a year.

I don't mind 250 nits as I use inside only. 45% RGB is okay as well for my needs. Many hate these screens even in IPS.

I don't need touch screen. I use only desktop mode. Would prefer not to have to pay for that feature, but if it has it, fine.

My favorite laptop choice would be an LG Gram, but I don't want to pay $700 range for them for their super lightweight portability. Their screens are great, and they are fast, with all the features I like typically. Mine never got hot or was loud, but last one I had was years ago.

Preferred Source: Costco for the extra year of warranty, the cash back, and their 90-day returns. They just don't typically have as good a deal as some other sources for my checklist and budget.

For any source, be aware of their returns policy before you buy. I will not buy from someplace that charges me for return shipping, or any restock fees.

eBay is a good source with free returns, usually.
Often a refurb deal on eBay will get you much more bang for the buck, and a 2-year warranty from Allstate included.
