Basically just a marketing term

https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-c...ane-widths
Perhaps the 990 Evo's most unique selling point is that it supports PCIe 5.0, but only with two lanes, which is equivalent to the bandwidth of the four lanes of PCIe 4.0 that it also offers. PCIe 4.0 SSDs work completely fine on PCIe 5.0 slots, so there's technically no advantage for the 990 Evo to support PCIe 5.0, especially when it's not even bottlenecked by its PCIe 4.0 connection.

Hmmm. Tempted for the 2TB for my rig. Or I could grab a crucial 4TB for $349. Decisions decisions. My current 1TB is maxed out now but that's over 3 years
Beatbuys 990 pro 4tb is $299

Has to be gen 4 for PS5.
This runs at 4 lanes on PCIe 4.0. Whether or not the PS5 will have trouble with the drive is another question.

I want to engage in some retail therapy, would that happen to be single-sided? My Google-fu isn't doing so well today.

What are the cheapest (DRAMless) nvme drives I can get, for Unifi NVR application? BW shouldn't matter at all, endurance TBW etc a lot
For an NVR you'd want high endurance enterprise drives, not retail ones like these. You're probably better off getting a used enterprise one than a new retail one

It seems to me like each of the last 4-5 years some of the best deals come out earlier and earlier before BF. It definitely depends on what you need, but companies want to beat the competition to the punch and clear a bunch of stock as if these early deals are free advertising to check back on BF with a fine tooth comb.
^^^^^ This. 100% correct and its not just the last 4-5 years, I have been using SSDs since 2008 and each year its the same. Late october and about 2-3 weeks after that and before BF are the best deals on SSDs.

yeah they have enterprise NVME SSDs as well - i bought a used samsung one for my server. Here's some info and a comparison I found from a server builds forum post on the topic a while back:
(for reference, I bought the Samsung PM963 22110 since offered way more endurance without requiring additional adapters)
Quote :
SSD Storage
SSD Endurance is typically measured in TBW (Terabytes written) or PBW (Petabytes Written).

SATA SSD Storage
While SATA SSDs are generally cheaper than NVMe drives, I will not be recommending any particular SATA SSDs at this time. NVMe is cheap enough to justify the additional cost for the recommended build, but SATA SSDs can be a good option if you're on a tighter budget.

Don't forget to:
  • Make sure you have the correct amount of ports (SATA 3)
  • Compare endurance ratings
  • Shop for enterprise SSDs [ebay.com]when possible
If you need additional NVMe storage besides the slots available on your motherboard, I suggest this adapter: Jacobsparts NVMe Adapter - $6 (click me [amazon.com])

Reminders:
  • M.2 is a physical slot type and does not describe the electrical connection or interface. Make sure you are specifically looking for M.2 NVMe drives, not M.2 SATA.
  • Gen 4 NVMe drives are backwards compatible with Gen 3, but require a Gen 4 interface for full speed operation.

Samsung PM963 960GB M.2 22110 - ~$30 (click me [ebay.com])
Samsung PM963 1.92TB M.2 22110 - ~$70 (click me [ebay.com])
  • Requires 22110 length compatibility, like this adapter ($12)
  • Up to 1800/930 MB/s read/write
  • Gen 3 NVMe
  • OK read and write speeds, good endurance (2.27 PBW)

Crucial P3 Plus 1TB M.2 2280 - $45 (click me [amazon.com])
  • Up to 5000/3600 MB/s read/write (requires Gen 4 interface)
  • Gen 4 NVMe (backwards compatible to Gen 3)
  • Great read and write speeds, low endurance (220 TBW)

HP EX900 Plus 1TB M.2 2280 - $45 (click me [amazon.com])
  • Up to 3400/2300 MB/s read/write
  • Gen 3 NVMe
  • Great read and write speeds, better endurance (400 TBW)

Intel DC P3605 1.6TB U.2 2.5" - ~$80 (click me [ebay.com])
  • U.2 drives will require some sort of adapter, the most common is this one ($19) [amazon.com]
  • Up to 2600/1700 MB/s read/write
  • Gen 3 NVme
  • OK read and write speeds, extremely high endurance (8.76 PBW)

Samsung/Oracle F320 3.2TB PCIe x8 - ~$135 (click me [ebay.com])
  • This is a native PCIe NVMe drive. It slots into a PCIe x8 or x16 slot on the motherboard.
  • May require a high profile PCIe bracket, available here ($7) [ebay.com]
  • Up to 5500/1800 MB/s read/write (requires Gen 3PCIe x8)
  • Gen 3 NVMe
  • Excellent read and OK write speeds, extremely high endurance (29.2 PBW)

$5 more gets you an SK Hynix Platinum P41 1TB at MicroCenter. The P41 is far superior in every way and faster than the WD Black SN850 and more power efficient then the 990 Pro.

https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...ssd-review

https://www.microcenter.com/produ...ternal-ssd

Or for $65, the Inland Performance Plus 1TB is a solid performer

https://www.tomshardware.com/revi...d-review/2

https://www.microcenter.com/produ...ternal-ssd

but the P41 is much better than the Inland Performance Plus

Of course, this is only appealing to those with an MC near by.
