This is one of the highest rated air purifiers by The Wirecutter for many years. Winix is okay too, but there's a lot to like about this Coway model.

There are tons of generic filters on Amazon. The one I like to buy is by VEVA:

If you can afford the genuine filters, the original HEPA filter is definitely superior.
IMO for the carbon pre-filters, you can buy the generic ones from Amazon and just replace them more frequently. (You kind of need to because Coway bundles 2 carbon filters with 1 HEPA filter. Normally the ratio is 4 to 1.)

Thanks, good deal on the replacement filters too, though only 3 left in stock atm.

Looks like Amazon has matched the price but they won't ship for a couple of weeks.

Sorry who should buy this?

I think my house has a pretty good filtering system. How do I know if I need this?

i just run one to have a little white noise in my small house...perhaps cuts back on dusk too because the filter gets filthy after a while. i've been using a box fan with attached filter....gonna get this one because the box fan is a little too loud.

fyi...i like this one because you can place it flush against the wall since the air comes in the sides and out the top. winix says you need about 10 inches from the wall on the 5500

Our bodies have their own filter (nose hairs, mucas, etc…). Does anyone truly notice that big of a difference in their lives with these? Does it mean you don't open your windows, don't go outside, etc…?

I just can't think of how I will literally notice the difference. Please help me understand.

People who have allergies who want to keep the air in their house free of allergens.

Also, if you have a standard HVAC system, hopefully you're not running HEPA filters in it. Because it creates strain on the fan motor.

This was already back ordered and was on sale for about $160 when I ordered it. Cancelled and got this cheaper now. Ship date looks similar. This will be my 3rd one as I am replacing other older units so it easier to replace all of the filters with the same thing. I get generic filters at 1/4 the price. They are not as good but good enough. As someone else mentioned, it is best to replace the carbon filter more often for odor reduction and flow.

I loves these, I have 2 and every week I clean them out. They both collect hair and dust. I have allergies, and my house is the only place my allergies are not acting up and as someone mentioned here, its a great noise machine when you are sleeping. 😴

I don't have any ductwork in my house, a boiler and radiators and a pellet stove. I open my windows every day for a little bit and i am outside more than I am inside. I notice a difference in both my allergies and eye irritants, and a difference for my dog too.

if you and no one in your house is effected by allergies and you feel your indoor air quality is good, then you don't need one. I'd recommend one for anyone in my situation though, and any pellet stove and wood stove users.
