Upgrading RAM

402 360 November 24, 2024 at 09:57 AM Amazon
Looking to upgrade the RAM in a family member's web browsing/email checking PC that has really slowed down performance wise the past few months. I've cleaned the machine up a couple of times recently and made sure that it had no viruses... but it's still slow.

Anyway, the PC was never really fast. It's a cheap Acer Aspire XC-1660G and has an Intel i3-10105 CPU and a single stick of factory 8GB RAM.

I'm no computer guy when it comes to knowing exactly what will work in these things, so was wanting to make sure what RAM I'm looking at will work in this PC.

Looking for something pretty cheap and was wondering if it would be best to go with a single 16GB stick or two 8GB sticks?

Here's some options I was considering (if they will work). Other suggestions are welcome.

Acer Aspire XC-1660G According to crucial has 2 slots for RAM with a maximum capacity of 32GB total RAM (16GB x 2).

https://www.crucial.com/compatibl...e-xc-1660g

Looks like compatible types are:

-DDR4-3200 PC4-25600
-DDR4-2400 PC4-19200

I guess what your best option would be would be dependent what your trying to upgrade to. If cheapest is goal, the best would be to match the speed of the 8gb stick currently installed, purchase a the additional 8 for a total of 16gb.

If you wanted to still go 16GB total but future proof a little bit for possible upgrade to 32GB, then purchase the faster single stick of 16GB.

The biggest thing is don't mix and match whatever you decide to do, this can lead to system instability and possible boot issues. (Not always but possible, save yourself some headache.)

But as far as options out of your possible choices, and sticking with cheapest option to get to 16GB total RAM, you would need to determine the speed of the 8GB stick that is currently installed and match.

If it's 8GB DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 then buy a 8GB stick that is also DDR4-3200 PC4-25600. If it's 8GB DDR4-2400 PC4-19200 then buy an additional 8GB stick that is DDR4-2400 PC4-19200.

To jay's suggestion of matching the speed of the existing RAM (if you go that route), you can use CPU-Z [cpuid.com] to easily find the current memory specs.

Also check to make sure their PC has an SSD (and that it's preforming ok) and not a spinning hard drive. As they age / get fragmented / approach failure, spinning hard drives can slow down which can cause some pretty noticeable effects when virtual memory is paged in and out.

I would get a second stick of 8 GB ram to match and check what is running at startup
Right click taskbar -task manager look at the startup tab not much needs to be enabled.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. Decided to go with the $20.00 8GBx2 route and if it doesn't help, I'll just pull it back out and put it in a PC that I own that could use it and suggest that they start looking for a new PC (which means I'll be looking for them).

What type of hard drive is installed if it is not a SSD that could make a major difference too!

It has a factory installed WD 256GB SSD with plenty of free space on it.

The RAM I ordered for it should arrive today, so hopefully I can get it installed asap and see if that helps.

Welp, you can't make this stuff up. So my little helper that wanted to assist with the RAM install was holding a chunky little metal flashlight for me and accidentally dropped it right on the motherboard from about 6 inches high.

You can probably guess the rest of the story, but let's just say that all it does now is make a high pitched alarm sound. And yes I tried switching back to the old RAM and it still does the same thing.

Oh well, new PC time for sure now.

Well if you want you could just look at buying a motherboard and processor as long as the memory will work or look for a deal from Costco but buy a brand name PC.

Having dropped things on motherboards numerous times, I'd simply suggest disconnecting all components, and then reconnecting them. Unless you can see physical damage I'd be surprised if dropping a little flashlight on the board would be catastrophic...

I'll have to give that a try when I get the chance. As for the little flashlight, it was a chunky solid aluminum flashlight that probably weighed 8oz or so. And as I watched it fall in what looked like slow motion, it hit right on top of a row of chips with the very edge of its aluminum lens rim and then fell over onto more stuff. Made a nice little thud.
