Leno returned to 11:30pm time slot

NBC Shakeup -- Jay Leno Comes Out on Top [tmz.com]

Quote :
We've learned Jay's 10:00 PM show will go on hiatus February 1. After the Olympics, Jay will take back his 11:30 PM time slot. What has not been decided -- whether Jay's show will be a half hour, followed by Conan, or whether Jay's show will be an hour and NBC says sayonara to Mr. O'Brien.

We're told Jay and Conan have both been told of the changes. As for Jay, interestingly, he'll get what he always wanted -- his 11:30 PM time slot.
No words on what will happen to Conan and Fallon... whether they both will get pushed back one hour of if one of them will be fired.

I prefer Leno at 11:30 than 10:00.

Leno is the only person to ruin the Tonight Show twice.

Conan is to "silly" for me. Not a big fan of Fallon either. I watch Kimmel most of the time.

I think O'Brien still has quite a following. Do you blame him though for being mad at the fiasco from a few years ago?
What ratings is O'Brien pulling compared to the network guys? I hardly ever hear about O'Brien and haven't seen his show ever since he moved to cable. (Ditto for Kevin Eubanks, Leno's former musician, but that's another story.) O'Brien, Kimmel, and Fallon or more comparable to each other since they're similar in age as opposed to Leno and Letterman.

True that NBC messed up by wanting Leno to do an earlier show and then changing their minds several months later. But couldn't O'Brien have gone back to his old gig that Fallon wound up taking over? I still remember Fallon's first show when he was so nervous as he interviewed Robert DeNiro. Now, over 800 shows later (I believe 806), Fallon is a natural.

I wonder if Leno will un-retire again as the "Tonight Show" host. But given the acrimony between him and the NBC execs, I think Fall 2014 will really be it for Leno. He may then retire and just do his Vegas gigs or maybe FOX or some other network will swoop him. I'd LOL if he took over O'Brien's spot on TBS.

Sometimes that kind of executive attitude works (Leno leads the other talk shows), sometimes it doesn't (NBC is the 4th place network).

I still don't understand how a comedian as great as Leno manages to consistently put on such a mediocre late night talk show, but I guess there are a lot of sales people out there who appreciate that kind of humor.

laugh out loud I never watched Conan (well, just once) until he moved to TBS. Now I'll watch kind of randomly, if I'm up late enough, and was watching something else before it came on.

Then again, TBS is one of the few TV channels that I actually know the number for. I have cable through my internet, so I don't have a channel guide or anything that tells me what channel I'm on, or what's playing. So I only regularly go to TBS and the weather channel. Big Grin

I don't think he'd do that simply because of the risk of failure. He has too much of a ego to risk it again.

Cable ratings aren't really comparable to the networks though, huge cable successes are basically on par with average major network shows. For whatever reason, people just don't watch cable as much. Availability was long thought to be the main reason, but that's not really the case anymore.

Leno plays right into the crowd that is too conservative for cutting edge humor and instead likes cheesy crap. He knows what it takes to get good ratings, he knows what it takes to be a good comedian, and he chose the former over the latter. He's a sellout.

He does have an ego like any celebrity would. But I think Leno genuinely enjoys being a talk show host guy and of course he enjoys a live audience. (If he didn't, then he wouldn't do those Vegas gigs and instead just spend more time with his car collection.)

True that cable ratings are less than network ratings in general for the mere fact that more people have access to network/broadcast channels than cable channels. But there are big hits like "Walking Dead" that blow away cable ratings. For a while, WWF/WWE did as well, but not sure about that anymore. Anyway, if we normalize cable ratings vs. network ratings, how is O'Brien compared to Leno?

That's your opinion that Leno is a sellout but it's a fact that he's #1 in ratings in what he does. Can't dispute facts. Those facts (ratings) bring in more $ for his employer, NBC (now part of Comcast).
