To *spread wax*? You could, but kinda risky. The pad of an orbital sander is a LOT firmer and thinner than the pad of an orbital polisher. If you catch the pad edge on the paint it will scratch.

Oops, thanks I actually meant to get a polisher not a sander! Do u think this one would work with thicker foam pads possibly to wax cars?

just get a harbor freight porter cable 7424 knock off with a 5/8 orbit. these things are finish sanders and have a small orbit 3/32...if that's better or worse i dunno, seems with a small orbit you'd mostly be spreading it by hand anyways, i have used the porter cable for both too it shouldn't matter except backing pad, it works easily one handed too.

I would not use a woodworking sander on a car for any purpose other than paint *removal*. Automotive orbital polishers are designed differently to accommodate the sensitivity of automotive paint. Also, spreading wax is easy to do by hand. It's *polishing* that you'd want a tool for, which is not the same as applying wax to a car.

I honestly can't tell if I should be trying to give insightful responses or whether we're just being trolled.

for reference the porter cable 7424 virtually everyone uses for wax application
is sold in 2 models a sander and polisher no difference in the models except the backing plate.

I would not recommend it for that purpose.

These are what you would use if you did.
Bosch 5" Sponge Applicator Pad ROS13 [amazon.com]
Bosch 5" Buffing Pad ROS14 [amazon.com]

Thanks to everyone that responded.
Sounds like my choices are:

1. Porter cable 7424
2. Harbor freight knock off of 7424
3. Bosch ROS13/ROS14

Thanks again!
