I bought this about 5 months ago and read the following reddit post by discgolf_foreva which seems to be accurate: You can tell which remote you'll get without opening the box. There's a sticker on the outside of the box by the UPC code. If it reads 2405A-2408A then the remote isn't backlit. If it's 2409 or up then it's backlit. 24 is the year and the second 2 numbers are week of production.

Not sure why they changed the name of this.. it was called the Onn 4K Pro, but to help you decide the differences;

Onn 4K Pro is cheaper
Onn 4K Pro has a USB port for storage or other USB accessory
Onn has Wifi 6; Google has WIfi 5.
Google has a gigabit ethernet port; Onn has 100Mbps
Onn has always-on voice commands (you can say "Hey Google" without using the remote and use it like a Google Assistant); Google doesn't (you have to trigger with the remote)
Google has Matter and Thread built-in so you can control smart devices that support Matter and Thread; Onn doesn't.
Both have a way to find your remote
Onn 4K Pro has a backlit remote
Unless they bring this to non-Google devices, the Google devices have built-in Google Home controls
There may be some differences in audio codec support, but others can chime in on that.

adding my 2cents since i just got this few days ago so i did some testing for anyone on the fence.

99% of my media consumption is streaming anime from my plex library on my DS920 NAS, mostly with .ASS subtitles and my LG c3 and samsung s90c cannot direct play .ASS subtitles, neither could my old roku nor 2nd gen firetv 4k. it would transcode and buffer and gets pretty annoying. This ONN box plays my HEVC anime with .ASS subtitles no problem. tested with AV1, OPUS, HDR and various encodes, all direct plays with no buffering. In the few days i had it, the UI did crash on me once and i had to unplug the power and plug it back in though, other than that its been great.

Overall the Shield is obviously a more capable product, but...

I bought the cheaper version of this ($20 Onn 4k streamer) because, unlike my Nvidia Shield TV, it supports 4k HDR Youtube playback. The Shield lacks the necessary AV1 codec using VP 9.x encoding to get HDR playback from Youtube.

AV1? Yeah, in the future will be the king, but at the moment there is no content anywhere, obviously YouTube is not important here as it is available in any codec supported by devices.

Every year we have a new shield killer. every year we forget about the last one . can you name a device that is aligned with a shield that has gotten 8+ years of support without being abandoned ?

People seriously asking if it can do what shield does? One costs $200 and the other $40. It's a very good $40 device lol

I'm more curious about how well it can handle a Kodi build with munkey build +Orion+seren for folks wanting a cheaper alternative .. loading wise/ buffering wise .

Youtube is available on every device but my point was that you can't get the highest quality Youtube playback on the Nvidia Shield TV. There is no way to play HDR Youtube on the Nvidia Shield.

Now that might not matter to many people, but it was the entire reason I bought the Onn 4k. It plays 4k HDR 60fps Youtube flawlessly.

Yes, the Shield has had amazing software support and is still class leading hardware on the Android side.

I'm kinda personally into streamer tech so as soon as I heard about this new then "Pro" unit hitting the market I snagged one at the regular price of 50 bucks and I think it was a good deal at that. Not slick but this current deal is very slick, IMO, because if you already buy from Walmart, the Walmart cash brings it to $34. Impulse buy.

BTW, as was mentioned before, the first units didn't have the backlit remote but I understand they've recently been getting rid of the non-backlit remote units and now are selling the newer backlit, be sure to check the numbers on the sticker, as someone else said earlier.

I bought one because I at least wanted to try one. My bitch has been low storage of stick. I only use cubes and the new 4kmax . The extra memory is worth the effort. This will have enough storage that I might have to quit bitching about the 8gb sicks.. Bought with wm+ and free shipping.. WM+ is getting to be a good alternitive to the Amerzoom..
