Anyone wanting to "JAILBREAK" this don't spend all your time trying to input ADB code, you can if that's your thing but I would rather get to using this right away, download POJECTIVY LAUNCHER (https://play.google.com/store/app...n_US&pli=1). It does all the programming in the background so you don't have to. It's FREEMIUM Launcher available directly from the play store but well worth the $7-8 bucks to change wallpaper and extra features. It already makes the launcher the default screen when hitting the home button for free using accessibility permissions. If you want to take it to another level also get Button Mapper and change the buttons on the remote to open something else. Don't forget to click BUILD VERSION 5 times... Located in system > about to activate developer settings. Notable addons and mentions are obviously DOWNLOADER, MOONLIGHT REMOTE GAME STREAMING from PC, CX EXPLORER to sideload APKS via network, SMARtTUBE - zero add youtube app (28544 downloader code), STREMIO (with Premiumize. STAY AWAY from Real-debrid, they turned on their clients), Fosmon Mini Bluetooth Keyboard, & the TRENDnet 2.5G USB-C to RJ-45 Ethernet Adapter (Built in ethernet only does 100mb/s.) I have EVERY STREAMER from apple tv to nvidia shield (TUBE & PRO), roku, firesticks, and chromecasts.. This IS the best bang for buck android tv at this price as of 12/2024. New On version pending in 2025 to replace Google TV 4K Streaming Box - ONN 4k pro plus (- this version only has 2gb so still not an alternative for this): https://www.androidtv-guide.com/s...google-tv/
I bought this yesterday. I highly recommend the Launcher "Projectivy Launcher" to replace the default launcher. Removes all the ads and let's you customize your screen as much or as little as you want. Removes all the bloat from Google TV. You can download it from the app store.
10/100 is a reasonable cost-saving measure for a streaming device. 4K streaming only requires about 15-20 Mbps. 100 Mbps is plenty for streaming media over the internet or even over a LAN. The only time you'd get the benefits of gigabit is if you're downloading/transferring large files, which device isn't really designed to do and most people don't do often on their streaming devices.

Can this play MKV files with an external hard drive?
MKV is just a container format, what matters are the video and audio codecs contained within. As long as the video player app you're using can understand MKV (which is basically all of them), that part is fine, but whether it will have hardware decoding support for the AV codecs is another story. If you have an MKV file with that weird Hi10 version of H.264 I don't think there's any device out there with hardware decoding support. If that MKV file has H.265 video, then unless the device is on the order of 10+ years-old, it should be supported.
I have the latest and best Shield Pro that was initiallly released in 2019. I love the thing as it's the best media streamer out there. But I just bought a couple of these Onn boxes for other TVs and set up Projectivy Launcher on them and I am amazed at how good they are. The fact that these are $39 bucks a pop and a Shield Pro is still $200, or $180 on sale is crazy. The specs are very comparable to the new Google 4K Streamer and in one way better — WiFi 6 adapter. The 4K Google Streamer is also $100 bucks. Here is a comparison with the new Google 4K Streamer…
Sunshine/moonlight might for game streaming purposes.
Yes, the 10/100 NIC choice was ridiculous. Most people are just going to use these devices wirelessly but if you are going to spend the time and effort into adding a NIC, at least make it gigabit. Really stupid.
Projectivy is great. I am officially boycotting all Amazon devices and services they can take their ads and shove them.
I still use the Fire Cube on one TV.. someone mentioned Prime switched to HDR 10+ over Dolby Vision but I found both formats to be good over OLED.
I also bought a new Apple TV over BF so haven't had much quality time with this Onn box but it's half the price. The Onn is closer to the my old Shield box I reckon.. Just nice to have options.. I geared up for the lockdown years ago, it was a good investment.
I found one bug with this Onn unit. I am using Stremio and the sound on streamed torrents, etc. will sometimes cut out completely and not come back on. I searched Reddit and the fix is just to go into the advanced audio settings of the Onn player and select "Never use surround sound". Apply the change and reboot. It seems to be some sort of audio sync issue. But this settings change fixed my issues.

Is it advantageous to upgrade to this from the Onn 4K Box from 2021 if I don't need the 32GB of storage and only apps I use are SmartTube and Kodi? This one seems to benchmark lower in all areas.

Yes, I had the old 4K box and it is slow as hell. This thing is light years faster. I couldn't stand the old model and how laggy it was when navigating with the directional pad. I used Kodi and SmartTube as well.
I'm sold on these. With some tweaks with the Projectivy Launcher, Stremio, and Real Debrid, this is the next best media player after the 2019 Shield Pro. I bought one for my son and will be buying more for my other TVs. I'm shocked a Walmart brand is the second best media streamer out there, especially at $39 bucks.

My TV is not 4k, it has youtube, amazon app just too slow to open it.
I have original Chromecast stick connect to HDMI port of TV. I play youtube app or tv/movie on web using my android phone, then using google home to cast screen of android phone to the Chromecast stick. I have RCA analog cable connect from TV to speaker.
I also have a roku 4 sit there collecting dust. I also have a synology NAS with some movies.
I am curious what's the benefit to upgrade to this unit

For those with an Onn 4K Pro and display with Dolby Vision.
Either set it to Match Content and Dolby Vision mode Low Latency or all content will be locked in 8 bit and not look as good. Then remember to set your picture profiles for SD, HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision on your TV.
Or you can set to always Dolby Vision and low latency (standard will lock everything to 8 bit color. Least on my Display. This can very on the type of TV) which will convert all content to Dolby Vision except HDR10+ (at least on my display).
The advantage of this is having mostly one picture preset to tweak and using the Dolby Vision IQ picture preset which offers: "Light Sense and Automatic Playback Optimization. As the name suggests Light Sense analyses data from the TV's ambient light sensor and Dolby Vision metadata to optimize HDR experience according to the changing ambient lighting.
Automatic Playback Optimization allows content creators to tag their content type via metadata. The content can be marked as Default, Movies, Game, Sport, or User Generated Content. This information is then used to optimize factors such as white point, frame rate, noise reduction and sharpness according to the content type.
For example, "Movie" content requires minimal post-processing, while "User-Generated Content" can benefit from more extensive processing to overcome consumer camera limitations." https://www.digit.in/features/gen...hdr10.html
Light Sense works differently than the awful Backlight Automatic Light Sensor in other picture presets that make the image too dark. Automatic Playback Optimization might be moot for content that's not encoded in Dolby Vision. Again will not convert HDR10+ content so these are moot for that too

Going to return that and try this instead. If I can use a custom launcher and get rid of ads it'll be great.
