I just posted this in the old thread, I wish they would combine both to help people interested.

I finally got the 3.4 set up. For context I'm coming from an Onkyo TR-NX 818. It had 130 watts per channel vs this at 100. My first day setting it up and playing around with it I was underwhelmed. I purchased the Klipsch RP 1200SW at the same time to pair with my KSW 15. I've had my KSW 15 for over 24 years and it has served me very well. Switching to a two subwoofer system has been amazing. At first that was the only thing that had impressed me. I was really second guessing the purchase of the Integra.

This morning I got up early, moved some furniture around, and played with the sub woofer placement. Then I ran Dirac for the first time. I did the full placement testing with the supplied mic. WOW … everything came alive. I can't wait to try Dirac with my laptop, then I'm going to buy the minidsp UMIK-1 mic.

I wasn't expecting to be wowed this much, especially coming from an Audyssey XT32 set up on my old TX-NR 818. I know it will progressively get better redoing it with the laptop, than the new minidsp mic. The bass has really tightened up. Original I didn't have both subs parallel from each other, so that helped also, at least with some standing waves. I don't feel the need to invest in an Emotiva Basx A3, or an Outlaw amp anymore. I probably will once I upgrade to 5.2.4, but for now I'm set and satisfied.

If you're on a strict budget and need 9.2 channels then the Onkyo TX-NR797 is a decent AVR for that price. Just be aware it was released in 2019 so lacks some newer features. No Dirac Live, eARC, pre outs, ALLM, VRR, QFT, QMS, etc., just to name a few. If you don't need 9.2 then the Onkyo TX-NR6100 (7.2) for $399, at Amazon, will have newer features including Dirac. For an AVR with 9.2 channels there's nothing that can touch the Integra DRX 3.4 at this price for all that it offers.

Maybe if I was strung out on meth and trying to pawn it for Jellyroll tickets.

There is no reciever at this price with 9 channels, pre outs, HDMI 2.1 on all ports, and Dirac built in. Also higher grade components compared to similar Onkyo and Pioneer models.

Ok..mixed metrics in my opinion

In an A/B amp design..A very good indicator of a better amp/power supply is the higher weight of the unit
Ditto.
My Mcintosh amp is 115 lbs on a good day. It's actually the input/output transformers and heat sinks that take up most weight.

Incidentally, how fast is the Adorama shipping?

Looking to sell $50 Adorama gift card for $40 if anyone is interested. Converted a visa card to use on this same receiver on Cyber Monday but the damn codes don't activate for 24 hours so I bought it in fear of the sale ending without the GC

On paper this receiver is awesome. In reality it's an exercise in frustration. I returned an RZ-50 for the constant relay clicking and HDMI dropouts. This definitely uses a different board because none of that happens.

What I do get is constant problems with ARC. I've upgraded the firmware repeatedly until it was on the latest version, and my unit was manufactured this year. Took like 3 updates to get current. I factory reset it every day to get ARC working again. Swapped cables. You name it.

I used to use a cheap EARC converter and a 20 year old Onkyo receiver. Worked flawlessly. This Integra receiver is beyond frustrating. Doesn't sound better than my old receiver either.

I have a cheap Denon 2 channel on another TV and it's rock solid. I want to chuck this Integra unit out a window. I went past the return period trying to get it working right. Ugh.

Bought one of these on black Friday and. Couldn't be happier. It has all the newest HDMI features and can really drive my KEF q750, q6 and q150s. Sounds amazing. Replaced a pioneer elite sc-71. I think Dirac has a lot to do with it sounding so great.

I have a Denon s750h currently running on 7.2. Should i splurge some money on this one? How much difference would it make?

I've put together a budget-friendly home theater using a Jamo S809 tower, an S89 center, a Dayton bookshelf for the front height, and Dayton Audio satellite. There are two subs - one Dayton Audio 10" and one Monoprice 10". Not the typical audiophile's setup
I'm in a similar boat but running in 5.1.2 on s760h, which maxes out at 7.2. I've been reading opinions on whether or not upgrading to 5.1.4 is significant, and it seems like the consensus is that there's definite improvement for overhead imaging going from 2 ceiling channels to 4. Personally, I don't think I get much out of just 2 channel ceiling Atmos, so I'm really tempted to upgrade to this, but I'm also really satisfied with my ear level channels. So, considering that I haven't encountered many titles that really use the ceiling channels but there still are many nowadays, I'm like 80 percent satisfied with my setup using 5.1.2 and my curiosity is making me wonder if setting up 4 ceiling channels will bring the satisfaction closer to 100

The quality of your speakers and proper placement of them play a significant bigger role, than the AVR imo.

Room environment does also but few people want to deal with that.

Unless you're willing to follow this layout, 80% will be hard to surpass especially for the cost to do it imo.

Some things to try:
  • Turn CEC/ARC off so there's just one way communication - if it fixes the issue then try new 48 Gbps certified HDMI cables.
  • Set HDMI 4K/8K Signal Format to 4K standard - if it fixes the issue then try new 48 Gbps certified HDMI cables.
  • Disconnect HDMI & unplug TV/AVR. Reconnect HDMI then plug TV/AVR to power source.
  • If you use a streaming device (ex: FireTV) connect it to input 3, not input 4.
  • If using long HDMI cables switch to optical HDMI cables or try a USB 5V to HDMI injector.
  • If using older HDMI cables then try using 48 Gbps certified HDMI cables.
If all else fails then contact Integra for help or possible replacement. If that doesn't fix the issue then request a refund. I'm curious, what was the model of the 20 year Onkyo? Also, did you setup Dirac?

i just got a house and wanted to get a nice sound system going, would this be a good entry point? i also have access to jbl/harman kardon receivers due to work discounts so can get a receiver at cost +10%, would something like the JBL MA9100HP be worth the bump into the next price bracket?

Those JBLs are really nice looking, modern receivers but very bare bones (and why I call them boutique). If you want features, you're better off getting a mass market Japanese brand!

If room correction is important, the one that comes w/the JBLs is trash so you'll have to pay for Dirac!

Exactly. Speakers have always been, and always will be, the most important AV components (aside from running a $50 receiver and $3000 speakersSmilie!. The only reason I'm following this post was my interest in picking up a new receiver due to the loss of sound from my sub and 1 surround with my 17-32 year old 5.1 AV setup consisting of an Onkyo TX-SR604, Infinity Reference main speakers and center, 2 JBL bookshelves and a 12" JBL sub. Fortunently, I played around with the cabling and low and behold, all channels fired back up. At first unconnecting and reconnecting the speakers didn't correct the issues, but turning everything off and on again got things back up and running.

So no need for me to upgrade yet since I'm very content with my AV experience.

I would suggest figuring out which layouts your environment will best support then find which one you ultimately want.
You can start here:
https://www.dolby.com/about/suppo...up-guides/

The quality of the speakers are the most critical for best sound quality.
I would suggest concentrating on building a 5.1 1st.

I understand "Atmos/X" is the rage but it's only as good as your core/base layer(5.1) setup imo.
Good luck.

I haven't been able to test DIRAC fully because I have to factory reset the receiver every day. At first listen it's no better than my old receiver. Then again my old TX-SR876 was an absolute beast.

I did some digging on AVS forum and other people have the same issue. Something is up with the way this receiver handshakes. I even got the AMP Speakers message another owner got after a firmware update.

If I connect the receiver via that cheap HDMI arc adapter I have it works fine. The problem is very specifically ARC related. It will even show the volume changing, CEC is working.

Given that I had handshake issues with the RZ-50 Onkyo has a problem. My $20 ARC adapter from Amazon doesn't do this, nor does my budget Denon receiver.

Also doesn't do this when used outside of ARC/EARC.

The other misconception with this imo is that only the LCRs really matters.
Imo every speaker matters for optimal sound quality.

As far as the $50 receiver, you can get legacy ones for close to that that will drive $3000 speakers very well.
Especially for a 5.1 setup imo. 😜
