I have an X17. Awesome axe. Stays sharp. Light. Well designed. This seems like a very good price for an excellent product. Prior to the Fiskars, I purchased a Lexivon V14 camping hatchet on Amazon. Like night and day with ease splitting wood, quality of the steel, and handle. Fiskars is superior.
Are these the best for chopping into already downed trees? Some national parks and forests allow collecting downed wood (that may or may not allow chopping downed trees). I'm currently using a chopping axe but man, it can take a while before splitting/getting chunks off.

If you are trying to split the wood that is already cut to the length you want, then yes. If you are trying to cut it to length, then no, you'd be better off with an aggressive toothed saw for that.
Its a very good axe for splitting wood. Shame they are made in China now though instead of Finland like the had been.

Must be a young guy. Chopping seems very ambitious unless you want the workout. I'd consider a cordless chainsaw for the cutting and this beauty for the splitting.

Im not trying or attempting to cut the entire diameter of the downed tree, which could range from 1-4 feet. Just wanting to take chunks of it off it to use as firewood for the weekend while camping... sorry, I should've mentioned that.

I thought about getting a small chainsaw but I don't know how the other campers would feel about me sawing away... not to mention the park rangers 😂

Cordless electric chainsaw are relatively quiet.
Side note: I bought one of these axes in 2012 from Amazon for the same price they are currently on sale for!
