I bought the TP-Link Tri-Band BE19000 WiFi 7 Router (Archer BE800) and it was nothing but issues. Signal strength was poor even when the device was in question was one room over. Anything past that often got disconnected. The reviews said it was a problem, but I figured it was people who didn't know how to set it up. It was a waste of $500. Only reason why I upgraded was because I was now getting 2Gbps down and 400Gbps Up and wanted to get utilize it Wifi 6E.

Tried almost everything before giving up and cutting my losses. This was less than a month ago, firmware could have fixed the problem but I wasn't going to wait. Went back the Netgear Nighthawk and haven't had an issue since. Funny thing I had nighthawk wifi 6 router before and thought they are too expensive and others could do the same thing. It was a pricey mistake on my end. Look at the negative reviews because its mentioning the same problems I went through. My place is less than 1000 sq ft.

I remember all those great Huawei "MateBook" laptop deals right before Huawei was banned. How great do you think firmware support will be on TP Link routers if the US govt bans them (ie, places TP Link on the US Entity List)?

Still have some Huawei laptops and phones. Firmware and BIOS updates ended when they were kicked out of the US market. Can't say I blame Huawei for that...

Well, yeah, the first point is that you now have expensive vulnerability-riddled electronics devices. I *do* blame, Huawei. I'm not sure why you give Huawei a pass and somehow leave them off the hook when the evidence that they were involved in many, many cases of wrongdoing - national security risks - IP theft - the list goes on and on. Regardless, the point remains that knowing all this and somebody still decides to buy a $200 TP-Link router, then you only have yourself to blame. There are numerous other good options out there for a consumer router in the $200 price range.

The ban will not take off your router, which you already have. It will just be banned from being sold in the US.
And maybe the automatic firmware update, which we can download the patch and update ourselves manually.

I don't think custom firmware will work with the WiFi. It might work with the wired connections if it works at all.

Quite the opposite for me. I have a "graveyard" with double digit Netgear Nighthawk wifi6 (ax series) from friends and myself and they're all unreliable. Dropped connections on Wi-Fi and wired. Moved to diff brand, no problems ever since. To each their own I guess.

Dumb question perhaps but what about open source firmware? Wonder how good the latest tech here is supported by openwrt?

One thing to note on the product page: Get 20% back on amount charged to a Prime Visa card.

If you have the Prime card, then you should get $40 back. That makes this router $160.

Reminder that most of your devices probably aren't fully utilizing WiFi 6 yet.
What does this even mean? WiFi 6 has been in mass production devices since 2020 in things like iPhones, ps5s, laptops, etc. most people are not rocking 6 year old devices in 2025.

Shout out to the guy I bought my house from who installed his FIOS modem in the far corner basement of a brick house forcing me to rely on annoying mesh systems
Bricks house are tough no matter what....It might be worth running a single network able to the middle of the house if you think a single router should work or you could run it to other side of house and have two in a mesh arrangement. Sounds fun.

The main appeal to this router is all the 2.5Gb ethernet ports for consumer level prices.

Even if you were to only use it as a wired router and got a better router for WiFi, it would still come under the price of the next best consumer offering with this many 2.5Gb ethernet ports.

With that said, TP-Link's firmware isn't great and there's no word on when it'll get third party support.

If you don't need the ethernet ports and can settle for 6E, the Flint 2 is a much better router that regularly goes on sale for $120.
1000% agree

Which routers would you suggest? Netgear has a history of failing early. Asus wifi 7 routers tend to be poorly review and expensive. 200 dollars for this router to kick it down the road might be a bargain. Basically a bad time to buy a router unless it is required. The market in general is pretty bad. I do consider it risky, but if you are willing to replace early then it might save money if one times it right.

6e routers which are reliable tend to be higher priced than this router. ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 Pro is what 279.00

Frequency range and what materials your walls are made of matter here too. Lower frequencies penetrate more walls than higher frequencies. But the higher frequencies have a lot more bandwidth.

I love that people are more worried about how a ban would effect updates and not concerned about why the ban may happen in the first place. Also, considering the immediate reversal of TikTok, I doubt there will be a ban. But that doesn't mean that there won't still be a potential threat.

I have an older TP Link AC4000 that I swapped out for an Asus router, it's still a very nice router, it's such a bummer there's no openwrt or ddwrt support for any of them.
