no, unless you are absolutely desperate for space, you dont want an external drive for games. games need to access the files constantly and an external is always slower. try to get an internal one. if you have a laptop, see if you have an extra nvme slot.

Although another commenter said that external drives are slower, while true, you can still use external drives for gaming. The Samsung T7 is not a great choice for gaming, but you can get an M.2 NVMe drive (Samsung 990 Pro, WD Black SN850X, etc.) and put it in an external enclosure (OWC, Acasis, etc.) and it will be more than capable of playing games off of Steam.

My current setup is a 2TB WD Black SN850X in an OWC Express 1M2 enclosure, and I store (and play) all my Steam games from this drive. It's blazing fast, and I have had no problems with my games. The only downside is that it can get expensive for NVMe drives and enclosures.
