PSA: Looks like total wireless changed the policy from 60 days after activation to 60 days of active service. This went in to effect April 1st 2025.

Good phone and good deal.

The a35 is good, and is likely the last of the "good" Samsung a-series phones with an SD slot. The a36 and a56 don't have them.

I got the previous (nearly identical) a54 deal and was very happy with it. The two phones are architecturally almost identical (same processors and ram). It's not a speed demon, but is fast enough to do all "normal" stuff, like social media, email, phone, etc... without any real performance problems. Maybe a gamer would be disappointed with it, and it will be getting OneUI 7 very, very soon.

Wow.

Porting in a number is a hassle -- if you don't already have a phone number.

The whole ID verification is just...how do the kids say it nowadays...."totes wack".

No idea how they're storing your image and credentials -- or who has access to them -- or what the process is for them to expunge that data -- or who is ensuring they're following best practices.

Oh who am I kidding, your DL and image are being sold to the highest bidder. We all know that.

So if my service ended on March 23, (activated Feb. 22) do I have till May 23 to buy another 30 days of service so it will unlock. Thanks
No you have until April 23 to buy another plan and still have it unlock on 4/23, the original 60 day window.

Well, I didn't buy another 30 days of service yet. I wonder what happens now. It doesn't say 60 days of service continuously.

I would submit an FCC complaint because you have activated way before this new unlocking policy was announced. They then either accept to unlock it for you for free(as it should) or they may ask you to buy a $10 plan for one extra month.

Based on recent data points, it seems you can have a lapse in service and still get unlocked in 60 days as long as the line shows 2 plan payments within that 60 day window. So you should be safe to buy after your first month expires but before 60 days is up.
If I buy after my first month expires, say 05/11, am I going to lose my phone number? That is, is there a grace period with which TW will keep my number and expect me to renew after the plan expires?
Thanks!

Not sure how long they keep your number but 30 days grace period at a minimum. Check reddit to see if others have data for how long they keep a number.

My bad. didn't realize we're past 4/23 Smilie

You can buy a plan today and should be instantly eligible to unlock. Buy the plan, then call the unlock dept and tell them you have made 2 payments since activation and it's past 60 days. They should unlock it.

Thanks. I did that but I don't expect to really get anywhere from them. I think they're really holding firm at the moment.

I activated my phone on 2/13 and hoping it would auto unlock on 4/14 with only 1 month of active service but it didn't get unlocked. I called TW and had to go with the $10 plan for another 30 days. My 30 days will be May 29. Will it automatically unlock after May 29th or do I have to call the unlock department? Does anyone have any data points?

You should be able to unlock immediately upon 2nd payment since you're already past 60 days from initial activation. Call their unlock dept and ask for unlock

I have no idea on how they proceed with unlocking these phones now. Things have definitely changed. Keep me posted on what happens.

I thinking they are going to say I need to wait until after the 60 days of active service is up before they unlock my phone which is May 29. It's unbelievable how messed up this has been.

Plenty of ppl have confirmed a second payment triggers immediate unlock if you're already 60 days past.

I have been using Tracfone service for the last 5 years. I want to be able to use the A35 on Tracfone with my current Tracfone phone number. My plan is to buy this A35 deal from TW, then activate it on TW porting in a phone number I will buy from Numberbarn. I will then occasionally use the A35 for the first month on TW. Then I would not pay for the second month of TW service and the A35 would become deactivated, but not unlocked. Could I then transfer my Tracfone phone number and service to the A35 even though the A35 is not unlocked? Will this scenario work?
Thanks for any help.

I'd recommend activating for 60 days with paid service & unlocking first.
What you're asking would only complicate things - even if it was possible they would likely still require adding another 30 days paid service (& might consider it a new activation with 60 more days needed).
With the TF family it's best to keep things simple to avoid any headaches later.

FYI, I terminated my service on Mar 20 after one month of use. I checked again today and surprisingly, my number was still kept with the Total Wireless account so I called and re-activated my number on the $10 plan. CS told me I'll be able to unlock the phone once I have a service for another 30 days.
