FYI, power input is 5V/0.6A, so you could easily power this via USB. The barrel jack is 3.5mm x 1.35mm. I used these cables [amazon.com] to power my unmanaged version and they work great.
Regular price, regularly goes lower
This switch has some managed functions (static IP, VLANs, etc.) versus an unmanaged switch, not a bad deal at $15, although 5 port switches fill up fast IMO.

we use an Unmanaged switch, hassle free and inexpensive. for the average user, would an Unmanaged switch be superior and more durable than adding more complications to a simple need for more channels?
thanks.

Yeah if all you need is plug and play to add more ports, a "dumb" switch would be just fine. That being said, I believe these TP-Link "smart managed" switches will work out of the box like a "dumb" switch would, although it wouldn't make sense to pay for functionality you don't need.

I would go for an 8 port switch minimum though, managed or "dumb", as the incremental cost difference between a 5 port switch and an 8 port switch is not much, and keep in mind that you'll occupy 3 ports of any switch right out of the box (one port to uplink to the rest of your network, plus the two or more devices you needed the switch for in the first place). 5 ports only leave 2 additional ports for expansion, while 8 ports allow for 5 additional ports for expansion - I've taken too many 5 port switches to e-cycle events for friends and family who quickly outgrew a 5 port switch and replaced them with 8 port switches.

I bought a smart managed Netgear 16 port switch years ago because it was a smoking deal, and didn't utilize the smart functions (in my case, setting up a separate IoT VLAN for smart home devices) until years later - if you think you may ever get in to smart home stuff, these managed switches are great, my point being I didn't utilize the managed functions until years later, and at that point was glad the switch I had could support VLANs. HTH

EDIT: Regarding durability, I suspect there is very little if any difference in the lifespan of a "dumb" switch versus a managed switch - I have a number inexpensive consumer grade managed switches throughout the house that have been silently doing their jobs for years (both Netgear and TP-Link)

I second the notion to buy it incase you want to isolate your IoT stuff and have a WAP or wireless router that supports VLANs

I agree that this is a hot deal. The vast majority of people don't need it. But unmanaged switches are often $15, so to get the bonus features for free is great!

I feel like you would be better served getting something like this off eBay by sniping it for $10 or so. That or a local electronics recycler that has a store front. Don't get me wrong, this is a killer deal if you need new, but these things usually last a lifetime and then some so used is generally very safe.

Also, I share the sentiment go with an 8 port if you can.

Actually the unmanaged switch occasionally goes for less, but for the easy smart 5 port switch, this appears to be an all time low.

TP Link less secure/trustworthy than other inexpensive brands? Question not statement.

8 could be better depending on the size of crowd you are serving. i just run a line to another room and then run another switch box to handle whatever i need.
so far i have used just one unmanaged switch for two rooms, but need another box in the future. never needed one until recently, and it was a no brainer to set up thankfully.

I pulled out all my TP-Link hardware and replaced it with Ubiquiti once I read from numerous sources that their cheap network hardware has back doors and spyware built in at the direction of their government.
