Vote with your wallet. Buy it if you think what Nintendo is doing is okay, if this is how you want to be treated; the choice is yours.

That's fair - I'm hoping the thread is helpful though for those trying to get ahold of one and not have to pay over retail on any marketplace.

I had a lot typed but here's the simple answer: if your son hasn't complained about the screen size of their switch, then no. As well, if your son has say a PS4/PS5 or a newer-model Xbox...then no.

If all your son has is a Switch and has complained about the size of the screen when playing in their hands then YES as you're then giving your son a larger screen + entry into 4K graphics.

Basically, for most people this is just a "fun" splurge of a purchase. Treat it like that. "He's a good son" type of purchase. He won't be missing out if he doesn't get it from you though vs some other purchases in life
Normally I would agree, but your last statement isn't entirely true. He will be missing out on many games, as there are going to be Switch 2 exclusives, such as Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bonanza, Hyrule Warriors: AoI, Kirby Air Riders, Duskbloods...surely many more will be coming too.

One other note is that in your original comment you mainly talk about whether or not their son complains about the screen size of the Switch 1, and then go on to say that a pro of the Switch 2 would be introducing him to 4K graphics...but if he mainly plays on the handheld screen as the entirety of your original comment implies, then that wouldn't necessarily be a benefit in OPs case, since 4K is only available via docked mode.

Either way, I think OP needs to decide if they have a discretionary funds to afford a console that is $450 + tax, and also the exclusive games to go along with it, which so far are priced around $70-$80 + tax each. It would be really dependent on if their child wants any of those Switch 2 exclusive games or not, as if they are only going to be playing games that are available on both consoles, the reason to upgrade becomes purely graphical.

Personally, if it was my kid, this would be more of a Birthday or Christmas gift, if it's something they wanted, and would probably be with the understanding that it's the only Birthday or Christmas gift that they will get for that day, due to the price. OP could also offset the price a bit by selling their original Switch, if they have no need for it once they get the Switch 2.

Are there going to be shortages? Should I buy two and scalp one of them?

As a parent this looks exactly like the original switch. My kid had to have the new one with the fancy screen so now he has two switches. Isn't this the same thing all over again but they are charging more? I don't get the point of it.

Been trying to update my payment methods on best buy and it keeps failing. Wonder if Best Buy is already beginning to get hammered by traffic. Tried multiple devices, multiple browsers and it keeps giving me the "Something went wrong." page. Annoying.

Buy one now, never open it, resell it years later as "CFW Compatible"

The original switch was released in 2017. Even the one with the "fancy screen" is at its core based on that same technology from 2017. Costs aside it's just time for a newer more powerful system, which this is. If he plays the one he has now he is going to want this new one eventually - it's just a matter of time...

Haters gonna hate. I will try for one. Been thinking of getting a second switch. We never use it in handheld mode so I wish they made a version without a screen for a lower price. Worst case I change my mind and cancel the order or let a friend buy it off me.

Anyone have a clue on if these will be shipped to arrive on June 5? Or at least a specific store? I am going to see if I can get one but saw GameStop says 1-3 day shipping, not sure if they usually ship early to arrive on release day.

I don't care what technology it has or how old it is I don't follow these things but in my eyes it looks like the same thing he already has. He doesn't need another of the same thing.
