I bought this camera last week. Mid to low range daylight video quality, terrible at night. Don't let the "sony starvis!" Marketing fool you, this cam performs like the budget ones from 7 years ago
There's not a single picture on the reviews from Amazon that shows a clear license plate. At day or night.
I've also noticed this, on not just this camera, but even others like Viofo etc. They all struggle with legible plates unless the car is literally 10' in front of you. Further than that and add in motion/speed, they just aren't detailed enough.
I'm now thinking that maybe I'm putting too much importance on reading plates. Face it, no camera is going to read a plate clearly 100% of the time. The vehicle would have to be _really_ close and at the perfect angle/speed to get a good capture. For hit-and-runs, yes a plate would be great to have. But in most states, unless someone is injured, the police won't do anything even with plate info. So best to rely on your car insurance to handle that incident and just show them what happened in the video instead.
That said, I'm leaning towards prioritizing a dashcam that captures clear video (pref day and night) over license plates. For most accidents, where parties involved would stop, clear video would be more important than plates. Just my 2c.
I just purchased this and will be delivered today. I may update this post with my remarks.
I have installed front and back cables are hidden (front only). Everything was pretty fast. I think for the price it is good to have front-rear-sd card together. I am kind of convinced that license plates are hit/miss with even the more expensive brands so I will just stick to the idea that this is a device to prove what has actually happened with color, brand, place, faces etc. So the quality is as you see many examples on the web and the sound/video is just smooth for me. But this is my first device so If any questions?
I have an older Roav cam that's wired into my USB outlet which turns on and off with the vehicle. It uses Mini-USB. Has anyone tried using an adapter to convert Mini-USB to USB-C? I want to get a new dash cam, maybe with rear cam as well, but I don't want to re-run the wire behind my dash and up the A-pillar.

You can buy them in like 5 packs on Amazon last time I looked. I've used those and ones that came with cables and never had any issues, the adapters are like an inch long and not flexible.
I just bought vantrue e1 pro. it overheats. i replaced a crappy fake 4k/1080 dual channel that also got very hot. Ran it in parking mode via OBD port or connected to a powerbank on hot summer days. The worst that happened to it, it no longer retained settings but still continued to record. I'm not a fan of this style or brand. Don't want to end up with another Viofo that also overheats but at least it doesn't shut down.

I thought that might be the case but the entire car seems to have the same clarity. But it's def a possibility
