Trickery and fraud? You're assuming people are taking advantage of Panera when in fact, Panera is getting exactly what they want in the deal too, whether it's a new customer or someone signing up with a new email address (not like it's hard for companies to detect this.) For the dirt low price of coffee or tea, they get you into their store where you're more likely to spend $11 on a half sandwich.

The house always wins.

If you have a Gmail address, you can add a "." anywhere within the address or a "+" followed by anything at the end of your base address and that will also go to your inbox. Gmail views it as the same address, but most vendors recognize it as a different address / account. For instance, if your email is JohnDoe@Gmail, then Jo.hnDoe@Gmail or JohnDoe+1@Gmail or JohnDoe+Panera@Gmail would be separate variants of your address that would also go to your Gmail inbox. It's kind of like the virtual credit card thing … Gmail essentially gives you an unlimited number of "virtual" email addresses with every account.

I recall seeing some people in the Sam's threads say their system seems to be more strict and might even use the address to detect previous users lately. I haven't followed that in a while though … probably something to mention in one of those threads if looking for more specifics.
Thanks - that's helpful. It may mean that depending on the company the Gmail tricks aren't as bulletproof as thought.

Actually, I meant to say that Sam's might compare the "physical address" for previous users. I believe the different Gmail variants are still treated as separate accounts at Sam's (as long as you're not tripped up by another comparison factor). But yeah, there are definitely other factors like phone number, physical address or CC # which can be used by some systems to detect duplicates. I've seen some people mention using free Google voice accounts for a second number, virtual credit cards, and home / work addresses, etc at times. There are lots of variables out there depending on the particular system and how serious they are about detecting dupes.

I was able to sign up for a new Sams Club account using the trick but was unable to get emails sometimes. For example, I bought a spotify gift card through Sams delivered to email. It never arrived and I had to work with customer service to cancel the order and change email (with the Gmail trick removed) and have it sent to that email. So you may be able to set up the new account just fine but may have email delivery issues in the future for some reason.

I cancelled my subscription and wondered I will have until Agust 31st. However, I just figured it will until next month (7/2). Dont cancel it if you want to keep the entire 3 months.

Hmm … that's interesting. I'd be curious to see people dig into the issue a little more in those threads, but it's probably not something that a lot of people would run across, so there might not be much data on it. I've used Sam's on and off for years and even picked up gift cards at times, but never gotten them by email.
