so people give a phone to apple that is potentially locked....? isn't that illegal?
There's a difference between what is meant by "locked".

Locked to carrier? Not a problem, all major phone trade-in outfits (e.g. Brightstar, previously used by Apple and all US carriers) have contracts where all carrier-locking is removed by Apple/carrier in the end (no one except Apple/contracted carriers can do this properly)

Locked in the sense you have a finance blacklist (you're a deadbeat that defrauded your carrier and won't pay) or blacklisted from theft (e.g. you're trading in stolen goods) is never removable

Locked in the sense someone else's iCloud account is associated with phone (again, you're trading in stolen goods), is never removable except by Apple when you show a purchase receipt or a death certificate (executor of will)

Ohhh thank you so much for clarifying!

If you can unlock the phone, they will accept it, but if it locked, you can't trade in, as like you said, it might be obtained illegally, such as stolen,….
Total BS. I traded in a lot of locked Iphones with no issues. Please don't spread falsehoods.

If you do it on the website, don't you get the net $200 price paid back via service credits, or is it $200 flat?
It's the price you see at checkout. I got the Moto Stylus last july when it came out and it was $39.99 + tax, total $42.79 (7% tax in my county)

It's funny because the website doesn't charge tax on the full MSRP like they do in the store.
I guess I should just see about picking up the 15 on the website for $200 instead, then I don't have to futz with porting in a number.
I tried ordering for $200 online, and when I got to the final step of paying it gave an error message and said the order couldn't be completed.

Their website is super finnicky, I would recommend using paypal.

Yes. Many people do this deal just for that purpose alone.
Are you sure about that.

someone would have to go to a store and report back if they tack on additional charges such as full tax activation. It's been said in the past ppl were made to buy chargers to get the deal..
