If you are making that comparison, get the base version of the M4 Mac mini and save yourself hundreds of dollars.

I can get why you would say that. But those specs don't translate well for comparison,
Apple has a direct history of not only having less ram in products but having apps run smoother and their SoCs benchmark BETTER than many of the QCA chip stacks they go up against all while being more power efficient.
having memory on die probably changes a lot of performance parameters and acts like a very high speed cache. You should compare benchmarks instead of focusing solely on specs. Because the specs don't compare how you think they do,

There's another post here on SD for the base model 16GB/256GB @ $449 and can be price-matched at BB.

An upcharge of $400 for an additional 8GB RAM and a 256GB larger SSD doesn't feel slick. But if you need the extra RAM then this is the only option as I've read the RAM is integrated directly into the Apple M4 chip and soldered to the logic board.

The memory is not on-die, and it's standard LPDDR5X. It just has a larger bus width (or put another way, more channels) than most dual-channel x86 CPUs. The newer Ryzen AI chips with soldered quad-channel memory are approaching the M-series chips in memory bandwidth.

I personally would go with the 256gb with 24gb ram if such a thing existed. Because I was doing research and found out usb c connected or thunderbolt connected nvme drives can also install apps and programs to it. And just leave the existing ssd for the OS. I was super impressed with the 500$ Mac mini with 16gb in how it does video editing on davinci resolve. It does better than my ryzen 5700x3d RTX GPU system and technically mine on paper is more powerful but it blew the doors off my system in some tests I've run.Edit. Turns out the 256gb version of the 24gb model does exist. Good to know. I would be more interested in more memory than storage.

Should I shoot for the M4 pro model?Or the 24gb with 512ssd
You should see the Mac mini vs Mac mini pro comparisons on YouTube. Lots of people said the base model Mac mini did almost as good as the pro for a fraction of the cost

Any recommendations for monitors to pair with this?

It is not standard LPDDR5X in practice - due to how it is used in the newly designed unified memory architecture.

That is the key thing that enables them to hit higher benchmarks with less memory.

So its not just memory bandwidth (although that is part of it), it is bandwidth + the entire architecture of how the CPU/GPU are all tightly integrated into the same memory pool.

The whole point / advantage of memory on die is very low latency and very high bandwidth. You are likely correct its not actually part of the same silicon. But I guess the point I was getting at is they are achieving the same via their UMA design and implementation.

That article is horribly written blogspam. M4 CPUs do absolutely use 100% standard LPDDR5X memory chips, soldered on a PCB/package next to the CPU and GPU. There are photos and tear downs on the internet including part numbers of the memory modules.

All of the benefits of "unified memory" as described in that article have existed in basic form for literally decades (e.g. on any Intel/AMD cpu with integrated graphics). Apple was the first to increase the bandwidth to far exceed standard PC DIMM setups, and pair it with a faster GPU. But now, as I mentioned, x86 chips are doing the same thing.

well i'm glad at least you admit that. that's the core of the special sauce when its part of UMA.

Integrated graphics are known as notoriously horrible in the PC gaming community. Not the best choice to highlight the power of unified memory. The benchmarks speak for themselves.

Good to know, it's still a hack and still overpriced.
It's not a hack, it's called a system upgrade and is essentially the same way one would upgrade a PC with a new drive.

No. It's most certainly not. Its a third-party imitation that has to copy Apples proprietary SSD form factor as It's not a standard M.2 drive, it's also a huge pain in the ass to get to in disassembly to upgrade and it's still overpriced vs. a typical SSD.

LOL...so good. Talking about overpriced anything when it comes to Apple. Still less than half the price of what it would cost from Apple.

Also, that huge PITA process is a couple screws and any one that has the slightest bit of skill could do it.

Well hey if you wanna buy it and upgrade it have at it big fuk boi : ) Half the cost relative to Apples overpriced charge is at best misleading. $320+ for a 2TB SSD is still too expensive. Further, even the most experienced people state the disassembly work for replacement is unnecessarily complicated and since it's not an official drive so it's definitely a hack. Beyond that the point is that it's absolutely unnecessary shit you shouldn't have to deal with to upgrade a drive simply because Apple is charging $800 for a 2TB drive to do it from the factory. Stay in context here guy.
