40L is under nearly every rectangular volume allowed on NA and EU carriers. I've had one for about a year and a half now, and I *can* pack it so full it won't fit in the overhead, but unless I decide to overstuff it and add my shoes in the outside pockets, it is a perfect fit for nearly every jet built in the past 30 years and turboprops like the ATR72. In the latter is where I encountered the "too full" pack option, though I was packed for a 4+ week Christmas trip. In an Embraer 145 it fits perfectly in an overhead, if admittedly taking up an entire overhead. In a Airbus 32x Neo it fits like a glove with the long dimension = the depth of the overhead bin and the width = height of the bin, so multiple Farpoint/Fairviews can stack like sideways pancakes.

If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.

NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

Is any recommended backpack considered a personal item?
carry a 15.6 laptop + 13 inch surface pro, a mirrorless camera with two lens
Doubtful, unless your camera bag is compact, given that two of the major airlines have 4" thickness limits and six have 6" thickness limits, with nearly all limiting the outside dimensions to 10x16 or less. Given that a 15" macbook is already 9.5x13.5, you're close to the width limit.

FWIW this Everki Studio [everki.com] pack is my one-bag travel kit for personal-item-only travel. It has two velour-lined sleeves (15/16" laptop and 13" tablet), two interior plain pockets, an exterior zip, two expandable water bottle slots (I use one for my sunglasses/spare glasses), an external zip pocket, front zip flap with lots of organization, and zippers strap pocket. Cons: The zipper-expansion (18->26L) is not great, as it only expands the bottom of the pack (like a teardrop), it doesn't have bedroll straps at the bottom, and its pricey for its size. I got mine second hand/open box for about $100. It easily fits underseat, and (in the 18L configuration) slides into a United personal item sizer when stuffed to the gills. I've only had mine for about 8 months, so I can't talk to it's long term durability, but it's still in nearly-new shape after more than a dozen air segments. Depending on your camera insert, it might be a good pack.

For fear of coming across as a high-priced snob, I'll offer that my interior organization for one-bag travel includes a $4 roll-up toiletry bag, $3 compression bag for clothing, a $1 5L polyester/tpu drybag for wet things and washing clothes, and a $1.50 zipper pouch for first aid gear, and a $2 "purse" organizer for storage in the pack - all bought from TEMU. (The latter I had to re-sew all the seams with kevlar thread, but I've not found a better organized item at any price; I'd happily pay $60 for a ballistic nylon version)

never needed cos they don't break and torn. $120 for this is a major rip off even with so called lifetime warranty. I won't be carrying the same bag for life time.
The actual value of this Osprey bag is around $20 or $30 max . I have paid around same price for other brands and they have been wokring fine for the last 10 yrs.
You got ripped off paying $30 because my great-grandfather bought his Abercrombie and Fitch bag for $2 and it has been going strong for the last 115 years. Accordingly, this Osprey bag is worth max $1.

I have claimed on the warranty for all of my Osprey bags (I have many, I love Osprey!). They've never given me an issue and have always sent current equivalent model although I understand they can also just make repairs too. I have yet to need any warranty repairs on my Farpoint series.
Good to know! Did they require that you send them your current bag first to determine if they would repair or replace?

So I have an Ozark Trail pack similar to this one (functionally identical), and I've been using it since 1995. Great pack and when I thought about getting another one--it didn't exist anymore. And this seems to be a common problem today with great things--they are there for a window of time and then gone. So what I've learned is if it's good and a lifetime item you want with you for a lifetime--buy enough for a lifetime. WinkI'm considering this pack and the others mentioned in this thread simply to have a backup pack now since I literally rely on my Ozark Trail for every single trip I take.
Ozark Trail was launched in 1998…

Bought this about 10 years ago at 45 bucks. Still going strong. Brought it through europe and even flew on spirit with it considered a personal item pretty darn loaded.

You're welcome! Big Grin You'll thank me later when the pack outlives your wife. EEK!

Just be sure to get an identical one to the one you have and keep them in two different places so she's never aware you have two. woot

I know I bought this bag before 1998, and it was the most expensive thing in the store at nearly $200. It was the only thing that could hold all my books for the day when going to college.

I've been addicted to this bag for years, but apparently I haven't been hit hard enough. What should I buy next? Gimme the good stuff.
The pro move would be to downsize to something like a 35L or even 30L. Plenty of options out there: Osprey 26+6, Matador's Globerider 35, Aer TP3, Cotopaxi Allpa, Pakt travel pack, ULA dragonfly....

How do you guys justify the empty backpack that already weights 3.5 LBS, when there are backpacks available that won't weight almost nothing with the same capacity?

Is this backpack suitable to take on a Camino de Santiago hike? I'm planning on doing that next year or do I need to get one more specific to that task. Thanks!

Some info sharing... the latest Farpoint (since like 2022) has less organization available than the previous versions. They relocated the laptop sleeve to a better location (closer to your back), but then removed the entire front compartment where the laptop used to be (not a fan of that since it was useful for storing more than a laptop). They got rid of the old not very good water bottle / mesh pockets and replaced it with something more like a stuff pocket (a good change). They also moved the small stash pocket to a better location.
They also removed the single shoulder strap and its attachment points that allowed you to carry it like a duffel bag. That was one of the features that made the pre-2022 version my favorite travel backpack ever because it was so versatile. There's also no separate small/large sizes anymore so if you're on an extreme of the spectrum in terms of height the fit might not be as great. There's also no more velcro to hold the rolled up back fabric in place when the shoulder straps are out, so you need to pack it in tightly so it doesn't fall out. I also agree that the new laptop sleeve is far less useful than the front compartment was and it's annoying how it intrudes into the main storage space.

Having said that, I'm a harsh critic because the previous Farpoint 40 was just so darn good. All the Osprey gear I've owned is extremely solidly built and this is still a good deal for a good travel backpack if you won't miss the features of the older version.

I love this backpack. I attach a daypack to the front of it for full turtle mode. I have done 2 weeks in japan and a week in africa and a week in europe with this bag in the last two years and it is amazingly comfortable. Plenty of space if you are ok sink washing (or laundromat) once a week. It's also quite comfortable with a lot of weight in it because of the waist belt and frame. Offsetting with a front pack also helps keep the center of mass comfortable.

I wish I could think of a reason to buy this deal, but I don't see the one I have wearing out any time soon (and I use it a lot).
Are you a backpacker by chance? I'm currently doing 2 weeks in Greece and brought my 55L Gregory. My actual backpacking pack. It's working better than I thought. Just want to confirm if this pack, fully loaded, carries the weight well on the hips.
