If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.
NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.
Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

Regarding fully loaded, I've probably only had it packed (with day pack attached to the back of it) to about 35 or 40lb. It was comfortable enough to city walk and subway travel 5-10 miles a day (I'm in ok, but mediocre shape). It is certainly more comfortable with the daypack on the front than the back for weight distribution.

If you're packing that much, this should be a good travel pack. Just looking to keep the weight off the shoulders.
The actual value of this Osprey bag is around $20 or $30 max . I have paid around same price for other brands and they have been wokring fine for the last 10 yrs.
I appreciate the eye towards value but a $30 max value is absolutely out to lunch.
The quality of materials and the construction and the design of the harness are what sets apart higher end bags like this.
Swiss gear doesn't usually make bags this big, their quality is middling and their prices are typically around $100 and up. It's hard to imagine anything from them that's 40l or larger and even harder to imagine it costing around $30
Eddie Bauer has similar prices but they do go on sale and sometimes go for about a quarter of their retail prices, but again nothing in 40l sizes except for backpacking type bags. Those don't work as well for travel as they're usually too tall to fit in overhead bins.
I think you're seeing this as any okd backpack and not realizing that a 40l travel backpack has to fit a certain size and shape and even comparing cheap junky amazon ones - the cheapest ypu get that won't fall apart on one trip being fully packed out - because 40l is a lot of weight on those seams, is about $70 or $80 with Tomtoc and others - but Osprey has lifetime warranty and a lot of people really love their harness systems and feel they're worth paying for.
Ypu may be unconvinced about this pack, personally I am not a fan as I don't like the look much and I don't like packs over 35l for weight reasons-
but this pack is a very high quality one and a very good deal. If anyone is in the market they should definitely consider it.
By the way for $150 REI currently has the Matador SEG-45 A super interesting backpack with sort of built in packing cubes and a pretty cool look. It's definitely worth a look but its harness system is pretty far below the level of this Osprey

I went ahead with the 40L and will add my own small pack, if needed. Anyway, this Greece trip has converted me to travel packing instead of luggage.
The lifetime warranty is part of the total value of the pack.
If a product has lifetime warranty then I know this is the last pack I will ever need. That is worth something if I know the company will honor the warranty.
Having said that, I'm a harsh critic because the previous Farpoint 40 was just so darn good. All the Osprey gear I've owned is extremely solidly built and this is still a good deal for a good travel backpack if you won't miss the features of the older version.
i fully agree here with how osprey handled the laptop position. they responded to consumer requests to move the placement or the laptop closer to your back, acheiving better center of gravity and reducing instances of laptops cracking when the bag is overstuffed/outer edges of the bag would curve (pressure points onto the laptop)
unfortunately even with moving the laptop to the back like most bag designers, it still wasn't a win for me for osprey on this bag because from what i recall, they made it where you still have to open the main compartment / expose it, in order to access the laptop...
my preference is a clam shell opening to where the laptop is in a padded sleeve which also pads your back, which also forms structure for a luggage pass thru.
the osprey had none of these, abeit saved prob 6 oz of weight and materials.
