40L is under nearly every rectangular volume allowed on NA and EU carriers. I've had one for about a year and a half now, and I *can* pack it so full it won't fit in the overhead, but unless I decide to overstuff it and add my shoes in the outside pockets, it is a perfect fit for nearly every jet built in the past 30 years and turboprops like the ATR72. In the latter is where I encountered the "too full" pack option, though I was packed for a 4+ week Christmas trip. In an Embraer 145 it fits perfectly in an overhead, if admittedly taking up an entire overhead. In a Airbus 32x Neo it fits like a glove with the long dimension = the depth of the overhead bin and the width = height of the bin, so multiple Farpoint/Fairviews can stack like sideways pancakes.

If you're of tall or stout build (I'm 6' 200#) nobody blinks twice letting you on while all the wheelies have to get checked. OTOH, if you're smaller (wife is 5'1 on a tall day) you might get some side glances, and once she was even informed she had to check her bag despite my walking through with essentially the same pack and not a single word. If you do have to stow it, the zip-up back flap that covers the shoulder straps and hip belt makes for a smooth, nearly snagless profile for automated luggage handling safety.

NOTE: if you're not an organization fiend like me, and want a daypack/underseat "personal" item, I'd spend the extra $40 and get the 55L Version [amazon.com]. That's a 40L Farview with a 15L daypack that is designed to piggyback, strapping in place quite nicely - though it does move the center of gravity of the system a bit far back. Definitely a traveler walking to a hotel/hostel configuration and not an Appalachian Trail through hiker rig. The downside to the 15L is that is has limited internal organization pockets - not quite as bare bones as a stuff pack (not by a long shot) but you're not going to get 16 built in pouches and pockets like you will with something like the Everki Studio [everki.com], but it's a might bit less expensive too. The differences in the 40L vs 40L that comes with the 15L pack are mainly that the laptop sleeve is in the 15L, leaving more room in the main pack. I think there may be one other difference...but it escapes me at the moment.

Anyway, after a dozen or so trips across the US and Europe, I give this pack top marks.

Are you a backpacker by chance? I'm currently doing 2 weeks in Greece and brought my 55L Gregory. My actual backpacking pack. It's working better than I thought. Just want to confirm if this pack, fully loaded, carries the weight well on the hips.
I'm only a backpacker when I travel. From what I have seen the osprey is optimized for travel not backpacking. It has a lot of similar features for comfort i.e. strap layout, chest strap, hip belt, frame design, shoulder straps.

Regarding fully loaded, I've probably only had it packed (with day pack attached to the back of it) to about 35 or 40lb. It was comfortable enough to city walk and subway travel 5-10 miles a day (I'm in ok, but mediocre shape). It is certainly more comfortable with the daypack on the front than the back for weight distribution.

Great backpack. 40l is too big as a carry on these days but some people seem to get away with it on flights heading south..
Never had a problem with my Osprey Porter 40. Regardless, Osprey makes a great pack that will last forever. Can't say enough good things about my experience with them.

35-40lbs is heavy! That's more than I pack for 4 nighters in the mountains 😂

If you're packing that much, this should be a good travel pack. Just looking to keep the weight off the shoulders.

never needed cos they don't break and torn. $120 for this is a major rip off even with so called lifetime warranty. I won't be carrying the same bag for life time.
The actual value of this Osprey bag is around $20 or $30 max . I have paid around same price for other brands and they have been wokring fine for the last 10 yrs.
There's always at least one in every slick deals post.

I appreciate the eye towards value but a $30 max value is absolutely out to lunch.

The quality of materials and the construction and the design of the harness are what sets apart higher end bags like this.

Swiss gear doesn't usually make bags this big, their quality is middling and their prices are typically around $100 and up. It's hard to imagine anything from them that's 40l or larger and even harder to imagine it costing around $30

Eddie Bauer has similar prices but they do go on sale and sometimes go for about a quarter of their retail prices, but again nothing in 40l sizes except for backpacking type bags. Those don't work as well for travel as they're usually too tall to fit in overhead bins.

I think you're seeing this as any okd backpack and not realizing that a 40l travel backpack has to fit a certain size and shape and even comparing cheap junky amazon ones - the cheapest ypu get that won't fall apart on one trip being fully packed out - because 40l is a lot of weight on those seams, is about $70 or $80 with Tomtoc and others - but Osprey has lifetime warranty and a lot of people really love their harness systems and feel they're worth paying for.

Ypu may be unconvinced about this pack, personally I am not a fan as I don't like the look much and I don't like packs over 35l for weight reasons-

but this pack is a very high quality one and a very good deal. If anyone is in the market they should definitely consider it.

By the way for $150 REI currently has the Matador SEG-45 A super interesting backpack with sort of built in packing cubes and a pretty cool look. It's definitely worth a look but its harness system is pretty far below the level of this Osprey

Is this backpack suitable to take on a Camino de Santiago hike? I'm planning on doing that next year or do I need to get one more specific to that task. Thanks!
I wouldn't this is more for city like travel. The back airmesh isn't like a hiking bag and you'll sweat easily. The suspension may or may not be good enough for you.

An issue I have with the new one size version is the new adjustable suspension is bulkier and protrudes into the interior space. Also, the laptop sleeve while a in a separate zipper, the sleeve is inside the main compartment leaving it inside and not removable.

FYI, did some reading and it sounds like the 40L vs 55L (40 + 15) have different configurations. For example, the 40L main pack for the 55L relies on the 15L daypack for exterior pockets.

I went ahead with the 40L and will add my own small pack, if needed. Anyway, this Greece trip has converted me to travel packing instead of luggage.

that backpack literally cost u less than $7 a year for 22 years and u wanted a refund or a brand new backback at the end for regular wear and tearedit: it cost you nothing, you got it free for doing a test drive
This misses the point imo.
The lifetime warranty is part of the total value of the pack.
If a product has lifetime warranty then I know this is the last pack I will ever need. That is worth something if I know the company will honor the warranty.

They also removed the single shoulder strap and its attachment points that allowed you to carry it like a duffel bag. That was one of the features that made the pre-2022 version my favorite travel backpack ever because it was so versatile. There's also no separate small/large sizes anymore so if you're on an extreme of the spectrum in terms of height the fit might not be as great. There's also no more velcro to hold the rolled up back fabric in place when the shoulder straps are out, so you need to pack it in tightly so it doesn't fall out. I also agree that the new laptop sleeve is far less useful than the front compartment was and it's annoying how it intrudes into the main storage space.

Having said that, I'm a harsh critic because the previous Farpoint 40 was just so darn good. All the Osprey gear I've owned is extremely solidly built and this is still a good deal for a good travel backpack if you won't miss the features of the older version.

i fully agree here with how osprey handled the laptop position. they responded to consumer requests to move the placement or the laptop closer to your back, acheiving better center of gravity and reducing instances of laptops cracking when the bag is overstuffed/outer edges of the bag would curve (pressure points onto the laptop)

unfortunately even with moving the laptop to the back like most bag designers, it still wasn't a win for me for osprey on this bag because from what i recall, they made it where you still have to open the main compartment / expose it, in order to access the laptop...

my preference is a clam shell opening to where the laptop is in a padded sleeve which also pads your back, which also forms structure for a luggage pass thru.

the osprey had none of these, abeit saved prob 6 oz of weight and materials.

How do you guys justify the empty backpack that already weights 3.5 LBS, when there are backpacks available that won't weight almost nothing with the same capacity?
Mine isn't the brand/model in the deal, but having one the same size and quality, I justify the empty weight with simply the strength--very rarely are bags strong that do not have some weight to them. I mean a pelican case is practically indestructible but has some serious heft empty. There are some newer/better materials that can make bags both light and strong, but no one outside of professional applications would pay the price, hence they're not retail items.

Don't know where people get the idea that Osprey doesn't make good equipment or is overpriced. I own several Osprey bags, as well as those from other brands, and I find the Osprey bags to be outstanding. Two I use for nothing but carrying rocks and equipment on rockhounding trips. Severely abused and still not a rip or broken buckle.

the new 40 has a a separate zipper to access it from the sleeve, but the sleeve is sewn into the main compartment
